국문 초록

이 논문은 특권을 중심으로 한국 서원의 원생과 서양 중세 대학 학생을 비교·검토한 것이다. 두 기관은 모두 각 지역의 최고 고등교육기관 중 하나로서국가 엘리트를 양성하는 곳이었다. 따라서 국가와 지방 권력은 그곳의 원생과학생에게 사회·경제적 특권을 부여하였다. 그러나 특정 계층에게 부여된 특권의 향유가 실제 국가 발전에 영향을 끼친 정도와 근대적 교육 기관으로의 발전 유무는 극명한 차이점을 보인다. 중세 서양 대학의 학생들은 대학 기능에대해 공리적(功利的) 입장을 취하였다. 즉, 중세 대학은 교회나 국가 권력의 시설이 아니라, 학문의 자유와 전문직에 의지를 가진 학생들의 자치단체에서 비롯하였다. 그들은 줄곧 교황과 국왕 등에게 자치권을 요구하였고, 현실적인필요성에 의해 그것은 관철될 수 있었다. 이러한 대학의 자치와 학생의 특권은 이른바 ‘대학의 자유’로 상징되었으며, 근대 이후 다양한 학문을 수용한 전문적 교육 기관으로 성립하는 데 밑바탕이 될 수 있었다. 반면, 한국 서원 원생의 특권은 교육적 효용성과 거리가 멀었다. 당초 학문을 장려하는 취지로부여된 특권은 피역(避役)으로 대표되는 사회·경제적 이해관계를 확보하는 수단으로 변질되어 갔다. 그런 가운데 17세기 이후 서원의 교육적 기능이 크게약화되어 갔지만, 군역 면제로 대표되는 특권은 변함이 없었다. 이러한 대목은 한국에서 서원이 근대 교육 기관으로 변모 또는 발전하지 못하게 되는 중요한 요인 중 하나로 손꼽을 수 있다.

영문 초록

This thesis is a comparative review of students in Korea’s Seowon and medieval university students of the West with the focus on special privilege. The institutions of the two sides were one of the highest education institutions for respective region to educate the national elites. Therefore, the national and regional powers provided social and economic special privilege to the students in respective institution. However, there are extremely clear differences in the special privilege granted to the specific class on the level of influence on the actual national advancement and development into modern educational institution. First of all, those students in medieval western universities had taken the extremely public benefit position regarding the functions of universities. Namely, those medieval universities were the self-autonomous organization of students who had strong drive on academic freedom and professional occupation, not as a facility of church or state power. The kept demanding on right of self-autonomy to the Pope and kings, and such demands were materialized due to the realistic needs. Such self-autonomy of universities and special privilege of students were symbolized as so-called ‘freedom of university’, and it was the foundation to establish them to grow into professional education institution to accommodate diversified academic fields after the modern era. On the other hand, the special privilege of Seowon students of Korea was distanced from the educational efficacy. Those special privileges granted for the purpose of encouraging the academic endeavors had turned into a mean to secure social and economic interests that are represented as an avoidance of national duties. Under the situation, the educational function of Seowon was greatly declined after the 17th century, but the special privilege represented for exemption of military service. In such aspect, it would be attributable as one of important factors that Seowon was unable to transit or advance as a modern educational institution in Korea.
