ChatGPT 사용 경험에 대한 대학생 인식: 영어 글쓰기 과제 수행 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 학문적 영어 글쓰기 과제 수행 과정에서 한국 대학생들의 ChatGPT 사용 목적과 효용성에 대한 인식을 파악하여 효과적인 과제 수행 방안을 모색해 나가는 데 연구의 목표를 둔다. 연구를 위해 총 93명의 참여자가 ChatGPT 사용의 목적과 만족도, 장단점, 그리고 전반적인 효용성에 관한 설문을 작성하였다. 수집된 자료는 빈도분석을 통한 기술분석을 시행하였고, ChatGPT의 장단점을 조사한 개방형 문항은 워드 클라우드를 사용해 주제 분석을 하였다. 연구 결과, 본 연구의 참여자들은 ChatGPT에 대해 전반적으로 긍정적인 인식을 가지고 사용에 만족하고 있었다. ChatGPT는 주로 과제 수행과 수업 내용 이해와 같은 학문적 목적으로 가장 많이 사용되었으며, 영어 학습에 있어서는 글쓰기에서 문법과 문장 구조를 확인하기 위한 용도로 주로 사용되었다. 영어 글쓰기에서는 교정과 수정을 위해 ChatGPT가 가장 높은 빈도로 활용되었다. 또한, 영어 글쓰기 과정에서 ChatGPT 사용을 통해 참여자들이 향상되었다고 인식한 부분은 문법 사용의 정확도와 교정 및 수정 실력향상이 상위를 차지하였다. ChatGPT의 장점과 관련된 키워드는 '쉽게', '정보', '원하는'이었으며, 단점과 관련된 키워드는 '오류'와 '실수'였다. 흥미롭게도, 학생들은 또래나 사전보다 ChatGPT의 피드백에 더 의존하는 경향을 보였지만, 여전히 교수자의 피드백을 ChatGPT보다 더 신뢰하는 것으로 드러났다. 이와 같은 결론을 종합해보자면, 한국 대학생들은 글쓰기 과제 수행 시 ChatGPT의 사용을 대체로 긍정적으로 받아들여 ChatGPT가 영어 글쓰기에 유용한 도구가 될 수 있음을 시사한다. 그러나 학습 효과를 극대화하기 위한 인공지능과 교수자의 상호보완적 역할에 대한 논의는 교육자들에게 여전히 중요한 과제로 남아 있다.

영문 초록

This study explores the experiences and perceptions of Korean college students using ChatGPT as a tool for completing assignments in a general English course focused on academic writing skills. A total of 93 students participated in the study by completing a questionnaire that addressed the purpose and satisfaction of using ChatGPT, its advantages and disadvantages, and its overall effectiveness. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were employed to analyze the data. A Word Cloud was used as an analytical tool to visualize the keywords from the two open-ended questions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of ChatGPT. The results indicated that Korean college students generally had a positive perception of ChatGPT. In terms of the purpose of using ChatGPT, it was found that ChatGPT was most frequently used for academic purposes, such as completing assignments and understanding course content. In the context of studying English, students primarily used ChatGPT to revise grammar and sentence structure. For English writing, ChatGPT was most often utilized for proofreading and editing. The keywords associated with the advantages of ChatGPT were “easily,” “information,” and “desired,” while those related to its disadvantages were “errors” and “mistakes.” Interestingly, students reported relying more on ChatGPT’s feedback than on that of their peers or dictionaries, yet they still valued human instructors’ feedback more highly than ChatGPT's. These findings suggest that ChatGPT can be a valuable tool for English writing, given the students' positive perceptions and satisfaction. However, the discussion of the complementary roles of artificial intelligence and human instructors remains important for educators.
