국문 초록

틴데일하우스는 2017년에 사무엘 트레겔레스의 신약성경 비평본을 저본으로 ‘완전히 새로운 비평본’을 출판하였다. 트레겔레스가 평생을 연구한 비평본을 저본으로 사용했기 때문이기도 하지만, 그간그의 비평본이 중요하게 다뤄지지 않았기에 기대되는 바가 컸다. 그런데 막상 THGNT를 읽다 보면, 정서법 관련하여 낯선 표현들이 많이 나온다. 이는 독자들이 NA나 UBS 판에 익숙해 있기에 발생하는현상이다. THGNT가 트레겔레스 판을 저본으로 삼았기에, 독자들은THGNT를 읽을 때 발생하는 ‘정서법 측면에서의 낯섦’을 트레겔레스 판에게 돌릴 수 있다. 그런데, THGNT는 트레겔레스 판과 상당부분 다르다. 때로는 일관성이 없어 보이고, 때로는 논거가 부족해 보인다. 그래서 연구자는 THGNT이 NA 및 UBS 판과 다른 부분을유형별로 분류하고, 각각의 부분에서 THGNT가 트레겔레스 판과 같은지, 다른지를 확인함으로써, 다른 부분을 확인하고 다른 이유를 추정해 보았다. 예를 들어,‘ei와 i의 표기 문제’에 대해서 THGNT는 트레겔레스의입장을 따르지 않는다. 이오타 하기와 관련하여 THGNT는 ‘도움이되는 것’을 유지하는 원칙을 적용했는데, 이는 ‘고대 사본’을 중시한다는 원칙을 벗어난 것으로 보인다. ‘이어쓰기 문제’와 관련해서도THGNT는 트레겔레스 판과 다른 경우들이 있다. ‘고유명사 음역’과관련해서도 THGNT는 트레겔레스 판과 다른 경우가 많다. 특히 ‘부정대명사와 의문대명사 문제’의 경우, THGNT가 트레겔레스를 따르지 않았다고 볼 만큼 둘은 서로 다르다. ‘변칙 자음 뉘’와 ‘자음동화문제’는 THGNT가 이유를 설명하지만, 구체적인 근거 제시가 필요해 보인다.

영문 초록

In 2017, Tyndale House produced a New Testament Greek Critical edition based on Samuel Prideaux Tregelles’ editions which were in his lifetime published from 1857 to 1870 from Matthew to Jude except Revelation, and then in four years after his death in 1879 the whole New Testament including Revelation with the help of his friends and followers. S. P. Tregelles devoted his whole life to publish a trustful New Testament edition based on ancient authorities. He studied Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, visited many libraries in the British areas and several countries including Italy, Germany, and France, compared manuscripts as much as he could contact, and finally published his own editions along with his principles on textual criticism. Hence, it is a necessary, in a sense awesome, job to compare the Tyndale edition with the Tregelles edition, with the eyes of NA and UBS editions. There are quite interesting points in this comparison among editions, especially in terms of a forgotten scholar’s textual critical viewpoints and principles, and of Tyndale editors’ orthography, selection, and revision. This article was written after having been read through the Tyndale edition from cover to cover and having researched Tregelles’ life and works very deeply, and of course after having been absorbed in the NA and UBS editions during several decades. This study shows that THGNT is quite different from the Tregelles edition in terms of orthography, for instance, using ei rather than i, iota subscription, proper name transliteration, using interrogative pronouns rather than indefinite pronouns, movable nu, and consonant assimilation. THGNT declares that it follows Tregelles’ principles as its own. Nevertheless, it is quite different from the Tregelles’ edition. Hence, any reader may expect how and why the differences have been made. This article lists the differences and somewhat reasons for them that have not been explained by Jongkind’s Introduction on THGNT.
