미국 한글학교의 현황과 당면과제

국문 초록

본고는 미국 소재 한글학교를 중심으로 한글학교의 최근의 현황과 당면해 있는 과제를 알아보는 것에 목적을 둔다. 본 연구자는 오랜 미국 거주 기간 동안 5년 이상의 한글학교 교사로서의 직접적인 경험이 있으며, 특히 가장 최근의 한글학교 현황과 변화를 상세히 알아보기 위해 현직 한글학교 교장과 교사들을 인터뷰했다. 연구 결과, 한글학교는 최근 재외동포 외의 외국인 성인 학습자와 한국계 다문화 가정 아동 등의 유입으로 학습자 구성이 다양해짐에 따라 학습자 간 수준의 차이가 더욱 커졌다. 교사들은 이러한 학생들 간의 차이를 고려한 수업 방법에 대해 고민이 많아졌으며, 학생들의 다양한 언어 수준, 문화적 배경, 한글학교에 온 목적 등을 모두 반영한 교육 시스템으로 나아갈 방향에 대해 고심하고 있다. 시대의 변화에 따라 한글학교는 민족어, 계승어로서의 한국어 교육기관으로서의 본래의 정체성 위에 이제는 외국인 학습자들의 한국어와 한국문화 교육도 담당해야 하는 기관으로서의 새로운 위상을 정립해야 하는 과제를 안고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이에 한국 정부가 적극적으로 개입하여 한글학교의 보다 체계적인 시스템 구축을 위해 노력해야 하며, 학습 대상자가 겹침으로 인해 생기는 한국어 교육기관 간 갈등에도 정부 차원의 적극적인 조정과 소통이 더욱 필요한 시점이다.

영문 초록

This article aims to explore the current status and challenges of Hangeul schools in the United States. The researcher has first-hand experience as a HLS teacher for more than five years during his long residence in the United States and interviewed current HLS teachers and principals to learn more about the current status and changes in HLS. The study found that HLSs have recently diversified their student body with an influx of non-Korean adult learners and children from multicultural Korean families, which has led to greater differences in levels among learners. Teachers have become increasingly concerned about how to teach to these differences, and are grappling with how to move toward an education system that reflects students' diverse language levels, cultural backgrounds, and purposes for coming to Hangeul. As the times have changed, Hangeul schools have been faced with the challenge of establishing a new status as an institution that is responsible for educating foreign learners in Korean language and culture, in addition to its original identity as a national language and heritage language. In this regard, the Korean government should actively intervene and strive to build a more systematic system of Hangeul schools, and it is time for more active coordination and communication at the government level to resolve conflicts between Korean language schools that arise due to the overlap of learners.
