시라카와 시즈카(白川靜)의 문자학 세계

국문 초록

시라카와 시즈카는 한자학 분야에 있어서 세계적인 권위자였다. 그는 1910년 일본의 후쿠이 시(市)에서 태어났다. 그 후 리츠메이칸(立命館) 대학의 문학부를 졸업하고 같은 대학 교수를 지냈으며, 1976년 정년퇴직한 뒤, 2006년 10월에 작고하기까지 집필과 강연을 계속해 왔다. 2004년 11월에는 일본 정부의 문화훈장을 받았다. 시라카와는 대학에 입학하면서부터 중국 고대 문자학에 관심을 가졌는데, 이후 일생동안 해당 분야의 연구에 종사하였다. 그는 나이토 고난(內藤胡南), 가노 나오키(狩野直喜) 등의 교토 중국학을 계승하는 한편 타이완의 굴만리(屈萬里), 동작빈(董作賓), 엄일평(嚴一萍), 주법고(周法高), 중국의 양수달(楊樹達), 호후선(胡厚宣), 용경(容庚), 양관(楊寬) 등과 서찰을 왕래하고 논문과 자료를 교환하면서 독자적인 세계를 구축하였다. 문자학에 관한 그의 주요이론은 다음의 네 가지로 요약할 수 있다. ① 한자의 초형(初形)을 통해서 그 초훈(初訓)을 구명한다. ② 한자의 기원과 효용을 제례학(察禮學)의 관점에서 설명한다. ③ 한자는 상징이며, 상정을 넘어 사유와 철학의 세계를 낳았다고 본다. ④ 한자의 구조는 본래 체계적이므로 한자를 연구하려면 체계적인 이해를 시도하여야 한다고 주장한다. 한국, 중국, 일본은 지난 수천 년 동안 한자(漢字)를 공용하였다. 시라카와의 연구방법론은 한국에서의 한자학 연구에 대해 좋은 귀감이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Shirakawa is an authority on graphonomy of Chinese characters. He was born in 1910 in Hukui(福井) city, Japan. Then he was graduated from liberal arts at Ritsumeikan(立命館) University, and had been a professor at the same university. He has been doing writing and lecturing since he retired in 1976. He was also awarded the Order of Cultural Merits from the Japanese Government. He devoted his attention to the graphonomy of ancient Chinese characters since entering university, and gave his life to the research. He succeeded to the School of Kyoto in the field of Chinese characters, also struck out a path of his own through the association with other Taiwanese, Chinese, and Japanese scholars. He wrote lots of writings about ancient Chinese characters. Even some of them were translated into Chinese and Korean. His principal theories can be summarized following four notions. ① Clearing up the cause of original meaning from the first shape of Chinese character. ② Explaining the origin and utility from the ritual theory. ③ Ancient Chinese character is a symbolic system, moreover it produced the fields of speculation and philosophy. ④ The structure of character is originally systematic. Therefore we need a systematic understandings to study character. Shirakawa looked at the Japanese language in the relation with Chinese character. As a matter of fact this methodology can be applied to the Korean language. Because Korea, China and Japan owned the ancient Chinese character in common throughout the years. Therefore we Korean scholars need to watching the field of Chinese character, and Shirakawa's studies are enough to be an exe.
