국문 초록

의철학은 철학의 한 분과 학문이다. 따라서 대학의 철학과에서 의철학을 교육한다고 해서, 이상할 이유는 아무것도 없다. 그럼에도, 철학과 내에 개설된 의철학 강좌가 낯설게 느껴지는 것이 사실이다. 이는 한국 대학의 철학과에서 의철학 과목이 교육되는 경우가 매우 드물다는 사실 때문만은 아니다. 의철학이 가지는 낯섦의 근본적인 원인은 의학 자체가 매우 전문적인 영역으로 인식되고, 이러한 의학을 대상으로 전개되는 의철학 역시 매우 전문적인 것으로서, ‘의료인에 의한, 의료인을 위한 특별한 학문’으로 인식되기 때문이다. 그러나 의철학은 ‘의사들의 의철학’과 ‘철학자들의 의철학’이라는 서로 다른 두 가지 연구 경향으로 구분할 수 있으며, ‘의료인에 의한, 의료인을 위한 학문’이라는 규정은 이 두 경향 가운데 ‘의사들의 의철학’에 해당할 수 있는 규정이다. 본 글에서는 우선 ‘의사들의 의철학’과 ‘철학자들의 의철학’이라는 의철학의 두 가지 경향을 간략하게 구분하고, 동아대학교의 철학생명의료윤리학과에서 이루어지고 있는 의철학 교육과, 경희대학교 철학과에 개설된 ‘의철학’ 강좌, 경희대학교 후마니타스칼리지에 개설된 ‘철학의 눈으로 본 의학’ 강좌를 살펴봄으로써 철학과에서 의철학 교육이 이루어지는 방식과 그 의미를 살펴볼 것이다.

영문 초록

The philosophy of medicine is a branch of philosophy. Therefore, there is nothing strange about teaching the philosophy of medicine in the philosophy departments of universities. Nevertheless, it is true that philosophy of medicine courses offered within philosophy departments often feel unfamiliar. This is not only because the teaching of the philosophy of medicine is rare in the philosophy departments of Korean universities. The fundamental reason for the unfamiliarity of the philosophy of medicine lies in the perception that medicine itself is a highly specialized field; accordingly, the philosophy of medicine, being centered around this specialization, is also highly specialized. This philosophical branch is recognized as an academic discipline that is practiced 'by medical professionals, for medical professionals'. However, the philosophy of medicine can be distinguished into two different research trends: “physicians' philosophy of medicine” and “philosophers' philosophy of medicine.” The designation of 'a discipline by medical professionals, for medical professionals' would pertain to the first trend. In this article, we briefly distinguish these two trends of the philosophy of medicine. Then, we examine how the education of the philosophy of medicine is conducted at Dong-A University's Department of Philosophy and Biomedical Ethics, the “Philosophy of Medicine” course offered at Department of Philosophy in Kyung Hee University, and the “Medicine through the Lens of Philosophy” course at the Humanitas College of Kyung Hee University. This will allow us to explore how philosophy departments approach the education of the philosophy of medicine and its significance.
