국문 초록

본문은 보훔 루르 대학의 기독교 윤리학자 귄터 토마스의 매체 연구를 중심으로 미디어의 현실이 수반하는 제의적 접근의 변화 및 매체의 반향이 일으키는 현대 사회 속의 종교 경험에 대해 고찰하고 있다. 이를 위해 본문은 변화된 세계 속에서 제의 그리고 매체의 질문을 제기하며, 그리고 종교 활동의 시간과 공간 이해의 변화에 대해 다루고 있다. 토마스는 특히 현대 사회의 많은 매체 중에서도 텔레비전의 역할에 주목하면서 제의와 현실의 문제를 다루어 나간다. 오늘날과 같이 인터넷 네트워크를 통한 쌍방향 소통이 가능해진 상황 속에서도 텔레비전이나 라디오와 같은 전통적 매체를 중심으로 수행된 토마스의 연구는 실제 현실을 넘어선 메타 현실의 차원을 이해하는 데 중요한 통찰을 제공하고 있다. 근대의 세계에서 탈주술화를 추구했던 사회가 매체를 통해 재주술화를 수행하며, 또 다른 현실을 구성하는 측면을 분석하는 방식은 코로나 팬데믹 시기 이후 관심이 증대된 메타버스 공간 및 가상 현실의 이해, 그리고 여기에서 수행되는 종교 실행을 이해하는 데 지침을 제공해 준다. 이와 같은 토마스의 관점은 뉴노멀 시대의 매체 이해와 그에 바탕을 둔 종교 이해에 도움을 준다.

영문 초록

Focusing on the media studies of Christian ethicist Günther Thomas of the Ruhr University Bochum, this study examines the changes in ritual approaches that media realities entail and the resonances of media on religious experience in contemporary society. Regarding this, the following study raises questions about ritual and media in the contemporary world, and the changing understanding of time and space in religious practice. Thomas addresses the issue of representation and reality, paying particular attention to the role of television among the many media in modern society. In today’s world of interactive communication over internet networks, Thomas’s research, which centered on traditional media such as television and radio, is providing important insights into understanding the dimensions of meta-reality beyond physical reality. His analysis of the ways in which societies that sought to disenchant in the modern world reenchant through media and the construction of alternative realities provides guidance for understanding meta-verse spaces and virtual reality, which have received increased attention since the pandemic, and the religious practices that take place in them. Thomas’s perspective contributes to our understanding of media in the new normal and the religious practices that underlie them.
