국문 초록

기억 연구는 과학 기술의 발전과 함께 어느 때보다 중요한 영역으로 여겨지고 있다. 신경과학과 인공지능 연구, 정보 통신 기술의 발달 등으로 인류 사회가 빠르게 변화하는 과정에서 이른바 인간 너머의 인간에 대한 근본적인 고민을 마주하고 있다. 이미 많은 분야에서 과학 기술의 발전은 새로운 도덕과 윤리적 기준에 대해 고민하도록 요구하고 있다. 미하엘 벨커는 근대 ‘기억’(memory) 개념이 오늘날 종교와 과학 간의 대화에서 중요한 주제 중 하나인 ‘인간 영혼’(human spirit)에 대한 현대적이고 보완적인 이해를 제공할 수 있다고 보았다(Belker 2016). 최근 기억 연구는 기억의 다양한 유형을 개인과 집단, 집단 기억, 문화 기억, 정경 기억 등으로 살피고 있는데, 벨커는 이를 크게 ‘미시적 기억’과 ‘거시적 기억’ 두 층위로 분류한다. 미시적 층위에서 기억이란 개인의 그리고 개인 간의 소통(정보 전달) 작용이지만, 거시적 층위에서의 기억이란 한 집단, 사회, 문화, 역사를 거슬러 작동하는 중추적 매개로서 자리한다. 따라서 기억이란 사람과 사람, 사회와 사회, 세대와 세대를 잇는 핵심적 요소로서 물질 세계를 초월하는 통로/수단/매개체이다. 이 글에서는 기억의 다양한 층위를 신경과학, 사회학, 인문학적 관점에서 살핌으로써 포스트휴먼 시대의 종교와 과학의 대화 가능성에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Memory research is regarded as a more important area than ever with the development of science and technology. In our rapidly changing human society due to developments in fields such as neuroscience, artificial intelligence technology, and information and communication technology, we are facing fundamental concerns about humans beyond humans. Already, the development of science and technology requires us to consider new moral and ethical standards. Michael Welker holds that recent research on “memory” can provide a modern and complementary understanding of the “human soul,” one of the important topics in today’s dialogue between religion and science (Welker 2016). Recent memory studies have examined the various types of memory at the individual and group levels, collective memory, cultural memory, and political and economic memory, which Welker largely classifies into two layers: “micro memory” and “macro memory.” Memory at the micro-level is a communicative action (information transmission) between individuals, but memory at the macro-level is positioned as a central medium that operates through a group, society, culture, and history. Therefore, memory is a channel/measure/medium that transcends the material world as a key element connecting people to people, society to society, and generation to generation. In this article, by examining the various layers of memory from the perspective of neuroscience, sociology, and humanities, I will examine the possibility of dialogue between religion and science in the post-human era.
