국문 초록

본 연구는 6차 세계가치조사(World Value Survey)자료를 활용하여 사회경제적 요인과 정치성향이 환경보호태도에 미치는 영향을 국가소득 그룹별로 구분하여 비교분석하였다. 분석결과 국가 소득그룹 및 환경보호 행동 유형에 따라 결정요인들이 미치는 영향이 다르게 나타나고 있는데, 사회경제적 요인 중 소득계층인식의 경우에는 금전적 비용이 수반되는 환경단체에 대한 기부가능성은 모든 소득국가 그룹에서 상위의 소득계층인식 사람들이 높게 나타났으나, 시간 및 노력이 소요되는 환경 시위 참여 가능성의 경우 고소득국가에서는 오히려 저소득 계층인식 사람들의 참여가능성이 더욱 높게 나타났다. 정치적 성향과 관련하여 고소득 국가에서는 서구사회나 일반적인 사회통념과 같이 정치· 경제적 이념성향이 진보적인 사람들이 보수적인 사람보다 환경보호 태도를 취할 가능성이 높았으나, 저소득 국가 및 중위소득국가에서의 일부 환경보호 행동에서는 두 그룹 간 유의한 차이가 없거나 또는 그 반대의 결과를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 개인은 자신이 속한 국가의 경제적 발전 수준에 따라 가지는 사회경제적·정치적 환경에 영향을 받기 때문에 국가 소득 수준에 따라 환경보호에 대한 태도에 다르게 나타나고 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study compares the impact of socioeconomic factors and political ideologies on individuals' attitudes toward environmental protection among country income groups using 6th World Value Survey data. The estimation results show that the difference in socioeconomic status holds a varied amount of influence based on the type of environmental protection being studied and the country’s level of economic development. We find that the likelihood of donations made to environmental organizations is higher among individuals having high income levels than those with low income levels in both high-income and low-income group countries. However, only people with high income levels in low-income group countries show more willingness to participate in environmental demonstrations whereas people with less income tend to participate in demonstrations more than those with more income in high-income group countries. It appears that the liberals in high-income group countries display an overall positive attitude toward environmental protection compared to conservatives, whereas conservatives are the ones to be preferential toward environment-friendly policies in low-income group countries, even though liberals are more likely to donate money to environmental organizations. In high-income group countries, people who prefer equal income distribution are more likely to support protecting the environment, while they are less likely to support protecting the environment in low-income group countries.
