세종대왕 관점에서 바라본 『훈민정음해례본』 재해석

국문 초록

훈민정음은 인류 역사상 매우 창조적인 문자이지만 『훈민정음해례본』에 대한 해석이 소리로 명료하지 않아 훈민정음 제자원리에 대한 논란이 많다. 심지어 훈민정음의 창제자가 세종대왕이 아니며, 범어나 파스파문자를 모방한 문자로 치부되고 있다. 따라서 세종대왕 관점에서 『훈민정음해례본』을 재해석해 훈민정음이 음악을 기반으로 한 독창적인 문자임을 밝혀야 한다. 그 방법으로 『훈민정음해례본』에 음악을 언급한 기본자음과 궁상각치우의 배치를 증명하고 훈민정음 스물여덟 글자의 ‘바른 소리’를 제시하는 것이다. 결과적으로 훈민정음은 기존 문자들과 음운 체계가 다르다. 현재 자음의 조음위치는 단지 구강 모양과 혀가 닿는 위치로 정하며, 조음 방식은 성대의 울림과 소리의 세기로 구분한다. 그리고 모음은 입술의 모양과 혀의 위치, 입이 벌어지는 정도로 분류한다. 반면 훈민정음의 자음 조음위치는 입술과 혀의 위치가 궁상각치우의 음계에 맞는 위치로 정하며 조음 방식은 입안의 부피를 고려해 구분한다. 그리고 모음은 소리가 울리는 위치로 분류한다. 또한 훈민정음의 삼분법, 방점을 비롯한 어려운 제자원리를 현악기인 거문고로 간단하게 설명할 수 있다. 이러한 측면에서 음악을 담은 훈민정음은 세상의 모든 소리를 표현할 수 있는 독보적인 ‘음악 문자’라 할 수 있다. 따라서 세종대왕 관점에서 바라본 『훈민정음해례본』의 재해석은 훈민정음이 세계인을 위한 문화유산으로 유네스코에 등재될 수 있는 근거가 된다.

영문 초록

Hunminjeongeum[Korean alphabet published by King Sejong in September 1446, meaning : the proper sound for the instruction of the people] is a very creative character in human history, but there is a lot of controversy over the creation principle of Hunminjeongeum because the Neo-Confucian interpretation of 『Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon』[An explanatory booklet on how Korean alphabet was created based on what principles] is not clear in sound. It is even known that the creator of Hunminjeongeum was not King Sejong, and Hunminjeongeum is regarded as a character that imitates Sanskrit or Phags-pa character. Therefore, by reinterpreting 『Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon』 from the perspective of King Sejong, it is revealed that Hunminjeongeum is an original character created through music. In that way, it is necessary not only to prove the arrangement of ‘basic consonants’ and ‘Gung-Sang-Gak-Chi-Woo[Traditional 5-Note Scale which had been used in Joseon dynasty]’ that refer to music in 『Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon』 but also to present the ‘the proper sound’ of all consonants and vowels of Hunminjeongeum. As a result, Hunminjeongeum has a different phonetic system from other letters. currently, the articulation position of consonants is only determined by the shape of the mouth and the position of the tongue, and the articulation method of consonants is divided into 'voice echo' and 'sound intensity'. And vowels are classified into 'lip shape', 'tongue position', and 'the degree to which the mouth opens'. On the other hand, the consonant articulation position of Hunminjeongeum is determined by the positions of the lips and tongue are fit the scale of 'Gung-Sang-Gak-Chi-Wu', and the articulation method is classified in consideration of the volume of the mouth. Vowels are classified only as the location where the sound is ringing. In addition, the creation principle of Hunminjeongeum, which is difficult to understand, including the ternary method[Cho-Jung-Jong Seong] and the special upper or side point over the character, can be briefly explained by Geomungo, a string instrument. From this point of view, Hunminjeongeum, which contains musical elements, is a unique ‘music character’ that can express all sounds in the world. Therefore, the reinterpretation of Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon from the perspective of King Sejong is the basis for being listed on UNESCO as a cultural heritage for people around the world. [Only the Humminjeongeum Haeryebon is registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World, and Hunminjeongeum has not yet been registered.]
