국문 초록

이 논문은 한국 기독교 철학사의 전사(前史)이자 첫 출발은 언제, 누가, 어디서 어떻게 시작하였는가라는 물음을 답하려는 시도이다. 이것은 누가 한국의 기독교철학자인가?라는 물음에 선행한다. 그래서 이 연구는 한국의 근대 전환기에 수용된 서양철학과 그 교육의 특징을 1900년 내한한 미장로회 선교사이자 교육자이었던 편하설(片夏薛, C.F. Bernheisel 1874 ~ 1958)의 생애와 평양숭실대학에서의 철학교육, 철학교재에 있다고 보았다. 비록 전문철학자는 아니었지만, 그의 철학교육이 다른 전문학교의 철학교육보다 앞섰고, 한글 교재 『논리략해』는 근대한국의 서양철학의 첫 한글교재로서 그 의미가 크다. 이 논문은 번안과 번역의 시대에 한국에서 선교활동과 교육을 병행하던 선교사의 철학교육이 한국기독교철학자를 낳은 일정한 역할을 하였다는 것을 보여주는 데 있다. 그의 철학교육은 자신에 그치지 않았고 일제 강점기 기독교철학자였던 채필근이 강단에 서기 전까지 진행되었고 구미나 일본으로 떠나는 유학생들과 신학자나 목회자가 되는 학생들에게 기독교적 사유의 첫 출발을 가르쳤다는 데 의의가 있다. 이것은 근대전환기의 서양사상의 이식과 수용의 모습을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper is a pre-history of the history of Korean Christian philosophy and an attempt to answer the questions of when, who, where, and how it began. This precedes the question: Who are Korean Christian philosophers? Therefore, this study examines the characteristics of Western philosophy and its education accepted during Korea's transition to modern times through the life of Pyeon Ha-seol (C.F. Bernheisel, 1874 ~ 1958), a Presbyterian missionary and educator who visited Korea in 1900, and philosophical education at Pyongyang Soongsil College. I thought it was in a philosophy textbook. Although he was not a professional philosopher, his philosophy education was ahead of that of other professional schools, and the Korean textbook The Element of Logic(Lon-ree-yak-hae) is significant as the first Korean textbook of Western philosophy in modern Korea. The purpose of this paper is to show that the philosophical education of missionaries who carried out missionary activities and education in Korea during the era of adaptation and translation played a certain role in producing Korean Christian philosophers. His philosophical education did not stop with himself, but continued until Chae Pil-geun, a Christian philosopher during the Japanese colonial period, came to the pulpit. It is significant in that he taught the beginnings of Christian thinking to students leaving for Europe, the United States, and Japan, and to students who became theologians or pastors. This shows the transplantation and acceptance of Western ideas in the modern transition period.
