관상(觀想)기도와 관물(觀物)

국문 초록

관상(觀相)에 대한 기존의 연구에서는 기독교부터 불교와 서양고대철학까지 다방면의 고찰이 이루어졌음에도 유학과 관련하여 ‘관상’을 다룬 적은 없었다. 그러나 유교철학에서 ‘관(觀)’이라는 말이 지니는 의미가 작지 않다는 점에서 ‘관상’은 유학적 범주에서 충분히 의미화할 수 있다. 그리고 우리 사회가 여전히 동아시아 전통의 자장(磁場)에 놓여있다는 점에서 현재 통용되는 관상기도라는 용어의 의미를 더욱 구체화하는 것이 가능하다. 유학에서 ‘관상’과 가장 가까운 용어는 ‘관물(觀物)’이라 할 수 있는데, ‘관물’은 중국 송대 철학자인 소강절(邵康節)의 핵심 용어이다. 따라서 이 글에서는 유교철학의 정수인 『주역(周易)』과 소강절의 「관물(觀物)」 편을 중심으로 ‘관물’의 의미를 살피고자 한다. Ⅱ장에서는 『주역』의 스무 번째 괘인 ‘관(觀)괘’의 기도적 요소와 관련하여 다루고, Ⅲ장에서는 『주역』의 가장 철학적인 해설서인 「계사전(繫辭傳)」에 있는 용례들을 통하여 자연과학적 주요 행위인 ‘관찰’의 의미를 다룬다. 마지막 Ⅳ장에서는 소강절의 ‘관물’의 철학을 통해 불교의 관상 또는 기독교의 관상기도와 어떤 차이가 있는지를 규명하고자 한다.

영문 초록

In existing research on contemplation (觀想), diverse inquiries have been made ranging from Christianity to Buddhism and Western ancient philosophy. However, there has been a lack of exploration of contemplation in relation to Confucianism. Nevertheless, considering the substantial meaning carried by the term 'gwan (觀)' in Confucian philosophy, it is adequately justifiable to conceptualize contemplation within the academic category of Confucian studies. Moreover, given that our society is still situated within the magnetic field of East Asian traditions, it becomes possible to further specify the meaning of the term 'contemplation,' commonly used today. The term in Confucian studies that is closest to 'contemplation' is 'gwanmul (觀物),' a key concept in the philosophy of Sogangjeol (邵康節), a Song Dynasty philosopher from China. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the meaning of 'gwanmul' focusing on the core texts of Confucian philosophy, the 'Book of Changes' ('I-ching' or 周易), and Sogangjeol's “Gwanmul” section. In Chapter II, the discussion revolves around the prayerful elements of the twentieth hexagram 'Gwan (觀)' in the 'Book of Changes.' In Chapter III, examples from the most philosophical commentary on the 'Book of Changes,' the “Commentary on the Appended Statements” ('Gyesajeon' or 繫辭傳), are used to explore the meaning of 'observation' in the context of natural science. In the final Chapter IV, the paper seeks to elucidate the differences between the philosophy of 'gwanmul' in Sogangjeol and the practices of contemplation in Buddhism or the prayerful aspects in Christianity.
