국문 초록

이 연구는 태 켈러의 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』을 중심으로 고전문학을 오늘날 살아있게 하는 방식과 그 의의에 대해 논하였다. 이 소설은 고전문학교육이 가장 잘 수행되었을 때의 이상적 모습을 보여준다. 우선 이 소설은 우리가 얼마나 많은 이야기 자원을 ‘문화적 유전자’로 품고 있으며, 그 활용 가능성이 얼마나 큰지 다양한 한국 이야기를 상호텍스트적으로 끌어온 구성을 통해 대변한다. 이런 이야기를 읽을 때 우리는 ‘한국인’이 된다. 이처럼 자기를 넘어선 더 큰 이야기 전통과 접속하여 이야기 속 존재로 자기를 확장하는 것은 고전문학을 가르치는 가장 중요한 의의에 해당한다. 한편, 이야기 전통도 하나가 아니다. 밤하늘 별처럼 흩뿌려진 이야기들 사이에 가상의 선을 그어 ‘볼 수 있는’ 형태로 만들어내는 것은 결국 우리 자신이다. 이 소설에서 릴리는 <단군신화>에 잠깐 등장했다 사라진 호랑이, <해와 달이 오누이>에서 호랑이로 변한 엄마 등의 한국 설화들을 모으고 자신의 이야기를 추가해 용감하고도 다정한 호랑이 여자들 이야기를 만들어냈다. 이야기 전통에 대한 회의와 질문, 그에 대한 자신의 응답으로 새로운 별자리를 그려낸 것이다. 누군가에 의해 다시 이야기되기를 기다리는 ‘단지 속 이야기별’처럼 고전문학은 새로운 창조에 열려있다. 문학치료학이 시사하듯, 우리 모두는 과거를 품고 미래를 기획하는 서사적 존재이다. 옛이야기는 자기를 비춰주는 거울이자 나눠쓰고 받아쓰며 고쳐쓰는 소재가 된다. 주인공처럼 자기를 투영하고 있는 이야기를 찾아 자기의 서사를 분명히 이해하고 호랑이처럼 가는 것, 혹은 자신이 부정하고 싶은 이야기를 자기 기획에 따라 고쳐쓰는 것 모두 이야기를 자기화, 내면화하는 방식에 해당한다. 이를 통해 문학과 삶의 접점이 넓어지며, 문학을 통해 내가, 나의 삶이 변할 수 있게 된다. 이러한 효용은 현재 교육에서 강조되고 있는 핵심적 지향인 ‘웰빙(well-being)’과 관련되기에 더욱 소중할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study explores the significance of classical literature education in keeping classical literature vibrant, using the novel When You Trap a Tiger as its focal point. The novel serves as an exemplary manifestation of an ideal classical literature education scenario. Firstly, it showcases the extent of narrative resources embedded in our cultural heritage, articulating their vast potential through the intertextual integration of diverse Korean stories. Reading such narratives transforms individuals into a ‘Korean,’ connecting them with a broader storytelling tradition and expanding their sense of self. Nevertheless, storytelling traditions are diverse; they constitute a collection of scattered stories, akin to constellations, shaped into a ‘visible’ form through individual interpretation. In this novel, the protagonist, Lily, gathers Korean stories, including the vanished tiger from the Dangun Myth and the mother transformed into a tiger in Sun and Moon Entwined. By incorporating her story, Lily crafts the tale of courageous yet affectionate tiger women, offering her responses to and inquiries about traditional narratives. Classical literature, much like story stars within a jar in the novel awaiting rediscovery, remains open to reinterpretation. As implied by literary therapy, we all embody an epic presence that spans the past and envisions the future. Classical tales serve as mirrors, shared canvases, and malleable materials for reflection, writing, and rewriting. Like Lily, Identifying with stories that reflect oneself and navigating one's story akin to a tiger, or amending unwanted stories in alignment with personal planning, all contribute to internalizing and personalizing narratives. This process broadens the intersection of literature and life, enabling literature to facilitate personal and existential transformations.
