국문 초록

본고는 조선 왕실 여성의 한글편지를 대상으로 자료의 특성과 소통의 양상을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 크게 두 가지 내용을 다루었다. 첫째, 현전하는 왕실 여성 한글편지의 현황을 정리하고 내용을 분류하였다. 2021년 발표된 <흥은위가 한글편지>의 사례가 보여주듯, 최근까지도 왕실과 관련된 한글편지 자료는 계속 새로 발굴되어 연구되는 중이며, 기존 자료에 대한 새로운 설명이나 오류의 수정도 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 새로운 연구 성과를 반영하여 2023년 현재까지 알려진 왕실 여성의 한글편지를 시대별, 발신자별로 나누고 자료의 수, 발신자와 수신자의 관계, 소장처 등을 새롭게 정리하였다. 또한 편지의 내용도 사적인 것과 공적인 것으로 나누고 각각을 좀 더 세분화하여 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 둘째, 본고에서는 한글편지를 통한 왕실과 사대부 가문의 소통 양상을 구체적으로 확인하기 위하여 19세기 초에 혜경궁이 외손자와 주고받은 편지와 정순왕후가 조카와 주고받은 편지를 서로 비교하여 공통점과 차이점을 살펴보았다. 혜경궁과 정순왕후는 비슷한 나이의 왕실 여성이며 19세기 초에 쓰인 이들의 한글편지는 사대부 친족과 주고 받은 ‘문안 편지’라는 점에서 공통된 면이 있다. 그러나 두 사람의 개인적, 정치적 상황이 다른 만큼 내용의 측면에나 언어 표현의 측면에서 차이점이 드러남도 확인할 수 있었다. 이처럼 왕실 여성 한글편지의 개인 간 비교뿐만 아니라 세대 간의 비교, 또한 같은 시기 왕실과 사대부가 한글편지의 비교 등이 더 활발히 이루어진다면 조선 후기 왕실 문화와 언어를 더 자세히 규명하는 데 기여할 것으로 생각된다.

영문 초록

In this paper, two major contents were dealt with for Hangeul letters of royal women in Joseon dynasty. The first is to organize the current status of royal women's Hangeul letters and classify the contents. As the case of released in 2021, new Hangeul letter materials of the royal family has been discovered and studied until recently, and new explanations or errors on existing data have been continuously corrected. Reflecting these new research results, the number of Hangeul letters of royal women known as of 2023 was divided by era and sender, the number of data, the relationship between sender and receiver, and the collection place were newly organized, and the contents of the letters were also divided into private and public. Second, in this paper, I will compare Hyegyeonggung's Hangeul letters exchanged with her grandchildren to Queen Jeongsoon's letters with her nephew, which are both royal womens letters in the early 19th century. Hyegyeonggung and Queen Jeongsun are both royal women of similar age, and their Hangeul letters have something in common as “Mun-an(問安) letters” exchanged with their relatives of noble family, but their Hangeul letters show difference in terms of content and language expression, caused by difference of their personal and political situations. If more comparisons are made between not only individuals but also generations of royal women's Hangul letters, as well as comparisons between the Hangul letters of the royal family and noblemen during the same period, it will contribute to clarify the royal culture and language of the late Joseon Dynasty.
