국문 초록

본고는 국문장편소설 속 ‘출생의 비밀 서사’에 대한 본격적인 연구의 일환으로 <완월회맹연>에 나타난 여성 인물의 ‘출생의 비밀 서사’를 분석하고 이것이 지니는 의미에 대해 진단해 본 것이다. <완월회맹연> 속 여성 인물 ‘출생의 비밀 서사’는 주성염(교숙란)을 통해 나타나는 ‘이중의 비밀’과 한난소와 양일아를 통해 나타나는 ‘뒤바뀐 사촌지간’ 두 양상을 보인다. 전자의 경우, 교씨 집안에서 자라게 된 주성염이 여씨가 아닌 호씨의 딸이라는 것이 밝혀진 이후 다시 호씨도 친어머니가 아니었으며 주양의 딸이였다는 것이 밝혀지는 복잡한 설정이 나타나고 있다. 후자의 경우 군주 신분을 회복했지만 첩이라는 위굴(位屈) 상황에 놓인 한난소의 사정과 군주에서 사족으로 신분이 강등되고 친아버지의 외면까지 받는 양일아의 사정이 교차되어 나타난다. <완월회맹연> 속 여성 인물 ‘출생의 비밀 서사’의 의미는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 천륜(天倫)과 은양(恩養)에 대한 일정한 담론이 형성되는 가운데 딸이라는 존재가 부각되고 있다는 것이다. 다음으로, 여성 인물들의 출생의 비밀은 모두 ‘성/음란함’이 매개된 시련이 동반되고 있으나 바뀐 신분의 하한선으로 물리적인 성적 위협을 겪지는 않는다는 것이다. 마지막으로, 극적 긴장이 아닌 복잡다단한 사연과 그에 대한 공감이 흥미소가 되며, 그 과정에서 주변 여성 인물의 개별화가 이루어진다는 것이다. <완월회맹연>에 나타난 여성 인물 ‘출생의 비밀 서사’는 다른 국문장편소설들 속 여성 인물 ‘출생의 비밀 서사’와 일정한 공유 지점을 보이면서도, 여성의 전력이나 성과 관련하여 긴박된 인식을 드러낸 점, 출가외인 이전의 상층 가문 속 ‘딸’의 존재가 부각된 점, 패륜적이고 자극적인 설정 이면의 심리와 사연을 흥미소로 한다는 점 등에서 <완월회맹연>이 다른 작품들에 비해 상층 여성 독자와의 친연성을 더 드러내고 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study is part of a comprehensive study on the 'secret birth narratives' in Korean full-length novels. It analyzed the 'secret birth narratives' of female characters in Wanwolhoemaengyeon and diagnosed the significance they manifest. The female characters' 'secret birth narratives' in Wanwolhoemaengyeon exhibit two aspects: the 'double secret' revealed through Ju Seong-yeom (Gyo Suk-ran) and the 'reversed cousin relationship' revealed through Han Nan-so and Yang Il-a. In the former case, a complex setting emerges after Ju Seong-yeom, who grew up in the Gyo family, is revealed not to be the daughter of Ms. Yeo but rather the daughter of Ms. Ho. In the latter case, the situations intertwine for Han Nan-so, who regains royal status but faces the plight of being a concubine, and Yang Il-a, demoted from a princess to a commoner and even ignored by her biological father. The meaning of the 'secret birth narratives' of female characters in Wanwolhoemaengyeon can be summarized as follows. First, within the discourse of heavenly ethics and graceful nurturing, the existence of daughters is highlighted. Second, although the 'secret birth narratives' of female characters involve trials related to 'sex/obscenity,' they do not experience direct physical sexual threats because of the lower limit of changed status. Lastly, the narratives create interest through complex and layered stories, emphasizing empathy rather than dramatic tension. These patterns and meanings, while sharing certain commonalities with 'secret birth narratives' of female characters in other Korean full-length novels, clearly illustrate the context of the consumption of literature by upper-class women as they distinctly emphasize the existence of 'daughters,' reveal a heightened awareness related to sex, and establish a lower limit for changed status.
