해방 후(1948~1950) ‘전향’ 선언의 문학적 형상화

국문 초록

국가보안법 체제하에 무차별적으로 시행된 ‘전향’은 격동하던 해방기 사상의 자유를 통제하고 대한민국의 법과 제도를 준수하게 만드는 국민만들기의 과정이었다. 특히 일간신문 광고란에 ‘전향성명서’를 게재하는 형식의 ‘전향’은 국가보안법상 좌익으로 분류된 단체를 탈퇴하는 동시에 국가에 충성맹세를 하는 것으로 귀결되는 전형적인 선언의 공식화였다. 그런데 ‘전향성명서’의 도식성을 문학인들조차 그대로 모방했다는 점에서 이는 제도적 전향에 요구되는 ‘최소한의’ 기준을 충족시키는 선언이었다고 할 수 있다. 그리하여 전향 전후는 통치권력에 순응한 귀결점이 아니라, 어떠한 입장으로 삶과 문학을 대면할 것인가의 고민이 전면화되는 시간이었다. 「산정삽화」는 좌익으로 지목된 청년 김창우를 소설가 박준이 심문하는 구조를 통해 그 억울함을 들어주고 변호하는 소설로 해석된다. 하지만 소설 「산정삽화」와 전향성명서가 1949년 11월 1일, 2일이라는 시기적 동시성에서 영향 관계에 있는 만큼 전향자 이무영의 존재론적 위치를 고려하여 소설을 재독할 필요가 있다. 이무영은 전향자로서의 자신을 김창우에 투영하여 오인된 좌익의 알리바이를 마련하는 동시에, 소설가로서의 자신을 박준에 투영하여 국가보안법과 전향제도의 본질적 폭력성을 문제삼기보다 사상의 분할과 분단, 대한민국을 승인하는 태도를 드러내고 있다. 이처럼 간략한 전향성명서로는 말할 수 없었거나 말하고 싶지 않았던 복잡한 내면이 작품에 반영되는 바, 국가보안법 체제의 전향 연구에서 문학 연구를 통해 맥락화된 전향의 다양한 의미가 규명될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The ruthless policy of ‘conversion’ that was implemented under the National Security Law suppressed the freedom of ideology during the turbulent period after the ‘Liberation’. It was a process of coercing obedience from the people of South Korea, turning them into subjects of the nation. Especially, the ‘conversion’ which was conducted by means of publishing a ‘declaration of conversion’ in daily newspapers was an officialization of a declaration of conversion, which led to the withdrawal from an organization that was classified as a ‘leftwing’ by the National Security Law and pledge of loyalty to the state. Even the community of creative writers imitated the schematics of the ‘declaration of conversion’ indicating that it was a declaration that met the ‘bare minimum’ requirement for a systematic conversion. Therefore, the time before and after conversion was not a conclusion accompanying obedience to the authority of the state. It was a time of manifestation of the contemplation on what standpoint they would face the life and literature. “SanJungSapWha” is understood as a novel in which a fiction writer, Joon Park, investigates a young man named Changwoo Kim, who was accused of being a ‘leftwing’, to shed light on the injustice he suffered and defend the young man. However, the novel “SanJungSapWha” and the declaration of conversion are believed to be in a mutually influential relationship due to the chronological coincidence, the novel merits a second reading, in consideration of the existential position of Mooyeong Lee, who converted. Mooyeong Lee projected himself to this Changwoo Kim character as a man who converted, to provide an alibi for the misunderstood leftwing while projecting himself as a fiction writer to Joon Park, as he exposed an attitude of admitting the division of ideologies, division of the nation, and South Korea itself, rather than accusing the inherent brutality of the National Security Law and the system of conversion. As such, the Declaration of Conversion reflects the complicated mentality that could not be put to words or was not desired to be put to words, the study of the literature could shed light on more meanings of the conversion as a context in the studies on conversion under the National Security Law system.
