新羅國執事省牒으로 본 9세기 新羅와 日本의 外交

국문 초록

본 글은 ‘新羅國執事省牒’에 대한 전반적인 이해를 바탕으로 9세기 신라와 일본의 외교 관계와 그 실태에 대해 살펴 본 논문이다. 新羅國執事省牒은 신라 흥덕왕 11년에 집사성이 일본 太政官에게 보낸 외교 문서인데, 구체적인 내용과 발급 과정이 전해지고 있는 유일한 신라의 牒式文書이다. 더욱이 이 문서는 당시의 시대상을 반영하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 일본 견당사를 둘러싸고 전개되는 외교적 갈등과 신라의 대일본인식을 반영하고 있어 9세기 신라와 일본의 외교 관계를 해명하는데 귀중한 자료가 되고 있다. 新羅國執事省牒에는 견당사 파견을 둘러싸고 전개되는 교섭 과정에서 일본은 중화사상에 기반 한 ‘告諭’라는 시대착오적인 외교 수단을 신라에 강제하려고 한 이중적 태도를 취한 반면 일·당 간의 항로를 통제하고 있던 신라는 애장왕대 일본과 ‘交聘結好’의 전례에 따라 항례에 따른 대등한 교린 관계의 회복을 지향하였음을 엿볼 수 있다. 무엇보다 9세기 전반 신라의 외교적 우위 속에서 양국 사이의 외교 인식의 괴리는 두 나라 사이의 우호 관계를 막는 중요한 장애요인으로 작용하였음을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is aimed at approaching the diplomatic relations between Silla and Japan in the 9th century and the realities based on the general understanding of the diplomatic document of ‘Silla Jipsa-seong.’ The diplomatic document of ‘Silla Jipsa-seong’ was sent to Dajokan. As this document not only reflects the circumstances of the time, but also reflects the diplomatic issues which were developing around Japan’s diplomatic mission to Tang Dynasty and diplomatic status intended by Silla, it is a valuable data for explaining diplomatic relations between Silla and Japan. In short, according to the document of ‘Silla Jipsa-seong,’ Japan tried to enforce a diplomatic tool called ‘Gaoyu’ based on Sinocentrism in the process of diplomatic negotiations developing around the dispatch of the diplomatic mission, while Silla was aimed at the restoration of relationship as equal neighbors following the precedent of ‘resumption of diplomatic relations’ during the King Aejang era. Most of all, the gap in diplomatic perceptions between the two countries at the time worked as a significant obstacle to friendly relations between the two countries.
