연옥은 조장된 두려움인가? 연옥에 대한 조직신학적 이해

국문 초록

그리스도교 신앙 안에서 교회는 “사람은 죽자마자 자신의 삶을 그리스도께 셈 바치는 개별 심판으로 그 불멸의 영혼 안에서 영원한 갚음을 받게 된다”(『가톨릭 교회 교리서』, 1021항)고 가르친다. 나아가 “이러한 대가는 정화를 거치거나, 곧바로 하늘의 행복으로 들어가거나, 곧바로 영원한 벌을 받는 것”(『가톨릭교회 교리서』, 1022항)으로 설명한다. 따라서 인간은 죽음을 통해 하느님과의 만남의 여정을 지속해 나가며 자신이 지은 죄에 대한 용서의 기회를 맞이하게 된다. 그것이 연옥이다. 그리스도교 전통안에서 연옥은 시간 개념과 공간 개념으로부터 자유롭지 못했다. 또한 그것은 연옥의 두려움을 가중시키는 배경이 되기도 했다. 따라서 연옥은 죽은 이들이 가야할 장소와 그곳에서 벌어지는 불의 형벌을 겪어내야 하는 시간으로 여겨졌다. 그리하여 연옥은 지상 실재와 구분되지 않고 실체적으로 묘사되고 그려졌으며, 그것은 연옥을 두려움의 장소와 고통의 시간으로 묘사하기에 이르렀다. 이를 통해 본 논고는 ‘왜 연옥은 두려움으로 다가와 있는 것일까?’, ‘연옥은 과연 인간이 스스로 만들어 놓은 두려움의 도구인가?’라는 물음으로부터 출발한다. 그리고 그 해답을 찾아가기 위해 조직신학적 성찰을 시도한다. 교회의 역사 안에서 발생된 연옥에 대한 믿음이 두려움이 아니라 희망이라는 것을 밝혀 낼 때, 그리스도인들은 삶과 죽음을 넘어서 구원을 향해가는 하느님 나라의 희망의 순례자로 살아갈 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. 하느님 나라의 완성을 향한 여정에 있는 그리스도인들에게 연옥은 더 이상 죽음 이후에 가야하는 고통의 불 지팡이가 들어 올려진 두려움의 장소일 수 없다. 정화의 고통은 오직 축복받는 아픔으로 그 의미를 지니기 때문이다. 따라서 그리스도인들에게 연옥은 그들에게 마련된 구원의 기회이며 자비를 입는 상태이며, 하느님을 마주하기 위한 준비의 순례라는 것을 기억할 때, 연옥의 정화는 조장된 두려움에서 벗어나 희망으로 고백될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

In Christian faith, the Church teaches “Death puts an end to human life as the time opens to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested in Christ.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1021) And it explains further “either entrance into the blessedness of heaven - through a purification or immediately - or immediate and everlasting damnation.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1022) Therefore, human being continues his journey to meet God through death, has the opportunity to be forgiven his sins. That is purgatory. In the Christian traditions, the concept of purgatory was not free from time and space. That became the background to accelerate the fear of purgatory. So, purgatory was considered as to the place where dead man ought to go, and the time to experience the fire punishment. Therefore, purgatory was not divided from earthly reality, was described substantively, and became to be portrayed as to the fearful place and the painful time. This study started from these two questions; Why purgatory came to be the fear? Is purgatory really self-made tool of fear? And tried systematic theological introspection to find the answer. When finding out the faith about purgatory which arouse in the history of the Church was not the fear but the hope, Christians could live for salvation, passing over life and death, as a hopeful pilgrim to kingdom of God. We Christians, on the journey of completion for kingdom of God, purgatory can no longer be a fearful place to go after death, where painful fire cane lifted. Because the pain of purification means only the blessed suffering. Therefore, for Christians, when they remember purgatory is the prepared opportunity for salvation, the divine grace status, and the preparational pilgrim to face God, the purification of purgatory can be confessed as to hope, not an incited fear.
