국문 초록

‘신앙’은 그 개념이 구체적으로 정의되지 않고 단지 전제된 상태로 연구되어 왔다. 이러한 상황에서 ‘이성과 신앙의 관계’에 대한 고찰이 이루어진다면, 그에 대한 타당성과 명확성에 의구심이 제기된다. 따라서 본 논문의 독창성은 충분히 이루어지지 못했던 ‘신앙’에 대한 고찰을 통해 그것이 지니고 있는 개념을 체계적으로 확립하는 데 있다. 신앙 개념이 명료하게 정의된다면, 그것을 가지고 행해지는 연구들에서 보다 명확한 결과를 도출할 수 있다. 신앙은 이성을 넘어서는 것들에 대해 다루기 때문에, 그것에 접근하는 데에는 어려움이 따른다. 그러나 신앙과 이성을 연결하는 다리를 발견하게 된다면 상황은 달라질 수 있다. 그 다리를 통해 신앙은 이성적인 방식으로 다뤄질 수 있기 때문이다. 연구자는 그러한 다리를 토마스 아퀴나스(Thomas Aquinas, 1224/5-1274)의 사유 안에서 찾고자 한다. 토마스는 ‘믿는다는 것은 동의를 가지고 사유하는 것’이라는 신앙의 정의에 대한 해석을 통해 신앙을 철저히 지성과의 관계 안에서 다룸으로써 신앙이 어떻게 이성적으로 다뤄질 수 있는지에 대해 고찰하고 있기 때문이다. 나아가 본 논문에서는 ‘신학적 덕으로서의 신앙’에 대해서도 고찰한다. 그것은 희망(spes)과 참사랑(caritas)과 함께 ‘대신덕’이라는 큰 주제 아래 부분적으로만 연구되었다. 그러다보니 신학적 덕으로서의 신앙이 지닌 고유한 특성을 발견하기는 어려웠다. 그러나 이에 대한 고찰을 통해 ‘이성과 신앙의 관계’를 이해할 수 있는 지점을 마주할 수 있다. 그것은 바로 신앙의 행위 안에서 지성의 역할이 강조되고 있다는 것이다. 그러므로 본 논문의 고유한 주장은, 신앙과 지성의 관계에 대한 고찰을 통해 신앙과 지성 또는 이성이 모순된다거나 무관하다는 사유를 넘어, 그것들이 유기적으로 연결되어 있다는 사실을 밝히는 데 있다. 이를 위해 신앙과 지성의 고유한 역할을 제시하고 상호간에 주고받는 영향을 고찰한다.

영문 초록

The concept of the ‘faith’, therefore, has not been specifically defined, but has been examined as a premise. The doubts about the validity and clarity of the ‘relationship between reason and faith’ would be raised, if it is considered under such a circumstance. This paper thus has originality, in that it systematically establish the concept of the ‘faith’, which has not been considered. The studies on it would produce more clear outcomes, if the concept of it is definitely defined. It is difficult to approach the faith, as it deals with things beyond the reason. This problem would be, however, resolved, if a bridge between them is discovered, since the faith can be reasonably dealt with through the bridge. The researcher intends to find out such a bridge from the speculation of Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274), because he dealt with the faith only in the relationship to the reason, and therefore, considered how to reasonably deal with it, by interpreting the definition of it, ‘to believe is to think with assent’. Furthermore, this paper considers the ‘faith as theological virtue’. It has been only partly studied under the large theme of ‘the theological virtue’ together with hope(spes) and love(caritas). It was, therefore, difficult to discover the inherent characteristics of the faith as the theological virtue. By considering this, however, it can face a point in which ‘the relationship between reason and faith’ can be understood. Then, it can be found that the role of reason is emphasized in the act of faith. The essential objective of this paper is to elucidate the fact that the faith has organic relations with intellect or reason, beyond the thought that they are contradictory or unrelated, by considering the relationship between faith and intellect. To this end, it suggests the inherent roles of faith and intellect and considers their interactions.
