국문 초록

본 연구는 뉴욕의 네일살롱의 개척과 운영에 지대한 역할을 한 ‘네일여성’의 가정 내 젠더 관계를 탐구하는 것이다. 분절노동시장이 초래한 이민 남성의 경제력의 하락, 여성의 바깥일의 의미, 다른 사람의 몸을 접촉하는 네일 일이 갖는 의미 등, 총체적 접근으로 네일여성의 일이 한국에서 사회화된 가부장적 이데올로기와 어떻게 작용하는지 살펴본다. 네일여성은 독립된 일터와 수입으로 상당한 수준의 해방을 경험하지만, 전통적인 성역할 이데올로기와 일정 정도만 타협하고 있음을 보여준다. 인종/민족/계층/젠더의 상호침투적 요소를 고려하면, 일터에서 경험하는 인종, 계급적 불평등과 차별이 가내의 젠더 불평등을 상쇄하여 낯설고 가혹한 바깥세상에 대한 요새이자 안식처로 가정과 가족에서 위안을 구하게 되고 이는 남편과 연합할 수 있는 기초를 제공한다. 발을 닦고 몸을 접촉하는 네일 일의 문화적 맥락은 여성 자신에게도 자아실현보다는 돈벌이로, 남편은 부인의 일을 사소한 일로 여기게 한다. 이들은 가족 결속을 위해, 가부장적 이데올로기가 체현되는 의례인 한국의 전통 명절을 지키려고 노력한다. 여성의 경제적 기여는 남성이 가족의 전통적인 성역할을 재고하도록 만든다. 그러나 일터에서 인종적, 계층적으로 분화된 사회를 경험하며 여성은 이주가 초래한 남편의 지위 상실을 수용, 때로는 동정하고 남편에게 명목뿐인 가부장의 직함을 남겨놓는다. 여성의 대응을 문화지체된 전통적 젠더 이데올로기와 변화된 상황에서 선택적으로 취합된 젠더전략의 개념으로 논의하며 맺는다. 젠더 이데올로기는 획일적이거나 고정된 것이 아니라 상호작용하는 문화적 요소에 의해 맥락적으로 이해해야 하며, 협상할 수 있는 수단들을 포함한 경쟁적 요소에 의해 수정되고 변화되는 것임을 보여준다.

영문 초록

Korean nail salons provide great employment opportunities for Korean women in New York City. Along with the income benefits, women’s employment changes family life in division of domestic labor, and conjugal relations. I examined this reconfiguration of gender relations in the specific case of Korean nail women through the nuanced cultural dimensions. While experiencing a significant degree of emancipation from the male-dominant Confucian traditions, the nail women appeared to compromise work with a modified orientation to traditional gender role expectations. Considering other interpenetrating structures of race, ethnicity and class, it is found that Korean nail women experience racial and class inequalities at work more acutely than the inequalities they feel at home based on gender. This sense of injustice provides them with a basis for unity with their husbands. Out of harsh outside world nail women seek comfort zone in their home and family, which leads to that they compromise with the traditional patriarchal ideology. They try to observe traditional Korean holidays in an effort to enhance cohesion among family members, which results in validating ethnic identity. Nail women let their husband’s patriarchal aura without any substance maintained. Facing a racially hierarchical society, women comply with or even sympathize with their husbands and their lost status. They leave him with his nominal patriarchal title. Therefore, patriarchal relations are neither monolithic nor static but contextualized by cultural elements with which they interact.
