〈옹고집전〉 속 ‘아내’의 서사적 배제에 대한 향유층의 의식 - 김삼불본〈옹고집전〉과〈쥐 둔갑 설화〉를 중심으로 -

국문 초록

이 글에서는 김삼불 교주본 '옹고집전'을 대상으로 그간 주목받지 않았던 인물인 ‘옹고집 아내’에 초점을 맞추어 서사를 읽어 내려간다. '옹고집전'의 주인공 옹고집은 놀부와 함께 판소리 서사의 대표적인 악인형 인물이다. 서사 속에서 옹고집은 불효를 저지르고 이웃에게도 박정하다. 그러한 성정으로 인해 결국 도승의 징치를 받게 되고 집에서 쫓겨나와 고초를 겪지만 이내 집으로 돌아와 가부장의 지위를 되찾는다. 문제는 이 사건으로 인해 치죄를 당하는 것이 옹고집만이 아니라는 점이다. 옹고집의 아내는 돌아온 진짜 옹고집에게 가짜 옹고집과 육체적・정서적 관계 를 맺고 그의 아이까지 낳은 부정한 여자라는 비난을 받고, 애지중지 낳고 기른 아이들은 한순간에 지푸라기로 변해버린다. 아내는 자신이 초래하지 않은 상황 임에도 비난의 대상이 되고 있으며 그 상황에서 아무런 항변도 하지 못한다. 옹고집의 아내는 당대 사회의 가부장적 인식 속에서 당연히 항변할 수 있는 상황에서 목소리를 소거당하고 만 인물이라 할 수 있다. 김삼불본 '옹고집전'과 유사한 서사가 옹고집전의 근원설화의 하나로 알려 진 <쥐 둔갑 설화>에도 나타난다. '쥐 둔갑 설화'에서도 아내에게 ‘쥐 좆도 모른다’는 비난과 조롱이 가해지는 모습이 보인다. 그러나 아내를 비난하는 말을 소거하거나, 아내가 돌아온 남편과 행복하게 잘 산다는 결말을 보여주거나, 아내를 변호하는 구연자의 말이 나타나는 등 다양한 각편들에서 아내를 두둔하 거나 비난의 시선에서 멀어지게 하는 방식이 다양한 형태로 구현된다. 이를 통해 당대 향유층이 서사에서 드러나는 부조리함을 인식하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있다. 김삼불본 '옹고집전'의 향유층 역시 죄 없는 아내에게 책임을 묻고, 치죄하는 서사를 부조리한 것으로 인식했기 때문에 이를 재생산하지 않고 다른 화소들로 대체하였던 것이다. 이를 통해 공정과 올바름을 인식하는 당대 향유층 의 명료한 의식을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on 'Onggojipjeon' in which Kim Sam-bul corrects wrong letters or wrong sentences and annotates them, and focuses on ‘Onggojip Wife’, which has not received attention so far. ‘Onggojip’ the main character of 'Onggojipjeon' is a representative villain in the pansori narrative along with Nolbu. In the story, Onggojip is a undutyful son. He treats his neighbors badly, too. So eventually, he is punished by a monk. He is driven out of the house and suffers. However, he soon returns home and regains his patriarchal status. The problem is that Onggojip is not the only one being punished for this incident. Onggojip accuses his wife of committing an affair and children turn into straw. The wife was criticized even though she did not cause it. And there is no defense in that situation. At that time, Onggojip's wife could not resist and speak out in the patriarchal perception of society. A narrative similar to Kim Sam-bul’s version of 'Onggojipjeon' appears in the 'The Rat Transformation Story,' known as one of the sources of 'Onggojipjeon.' In 'The Rat Transformation Story' his wife is also accused and mocked as 'not even knowing the rat’s genitals,' but in each story, the words criticizing the wife are deleted; the husband and wife return to a happy ending; or a speaker appears who advocates for the wife. Thus, the various versions implement a variety of ways of defending and not criticizing the wife. Through this, it can be confirmed that the enjoyment class of the time was aware of the absurdity revealed in the narrative. The enjoyment class of Kim Sam-bul version of 'Onggojipjeon' also shows a clear consciousness of the enjoyment class of the time that recognizes fairness and correctness by replacing the narrative that holds innocent wives responsible and persecuted with other pixels without actively reproducing it.
