이야기세계와 실제세계의 관계로 본 춘향전의 ‘성이성 모델설’

국문 초록

이 글은 춘향전이 실존인물을 모델로 하여 창작되었다는, 이른바 실존인물 모델설을 실제세계와 이야기세계의 관계양상으로 고찰하였다. 춘향전이 실존 인물의 이야기라는 주장은 19세기 문헌에서도 나타난다. 이러한 주장은 춘향과 이도령이 실제세계에서 존재했다는 믿음에 기반하고 있다. 성이성이 이도령의 실존인물이라는 주장은 1965년 성안의 선정비가 발견되면서 형성되었다. 성이성 모델설은 성이성의 부친이 남원부사라는 점, 성이성이 호남암행어사를 했다는 점과 함께 ‘금준미주시’를 성이성이 호남암행어사로 출두하였을 때 지었다는 성섭의 기록에 근거하고 있다. 그러나 김동욱은 춘향전은 허구라는 점을 강조하며 성이성 모델설은 비판하였다. 1999년에 설성경은 성이성 모델설은 다시 주장하였는데, 이를 KBS 『역사스페설』에서 다큐멘터리로 제작하면서 확산되었다. 그러나 설성경의 성이성 모델설은 성이성과 이몽룡의 공통점만 부각시킨 것으로, 광한루가 객사로 사용되었다는 사실을 간과한 채 눈보라 치는 날 성이성이 광한루를 방문했다는 <호남암행록>의 기록에 지나친 의미를 부여하고 있다. 『역사스페설』에서는 <호남암행록>과 『교와문고』 등의 문헌을 근거로 내세우면서 성이성 모델설을 주장하였는데, 이에 힘입어 성이성 모델설은 지역의 관광 마케팅에 이용되었고 위키백과 등 인터넷 사이트에서는 성이성의 실제모델설이 기정사실화되고 있다. 이야기세계에 관심이 높은 경우 사람들은 실제세계에서 허구적 인물이 존재했다고 믿는 경향이 있는데, 춘향전의 실존인물설이 제기된 것도 이러한 맥락에서 이해할 수 있다. 그런데 성이성 모델설은 대중독자의 관심에서 자발적으로 형성된 것이 아니라 문화마케팅 차원에서 인위적으로 형성되었다. 더구나 오늘날 춘향전은 대중이 몰입할 수 있는 이야기세계가 아니다. 이런 점에서 고전 춘향전에 기대고 있는 성이성 모델설은 문화마케팅 콘텐츠로서 한계가 있다.

영문 초록

This article examines the assertion that Chunhyang-jeon was templatized upon real individuals and explores the interplay between the real world and the story world. The assertion that Chunhyangjeon is grounded in the life of an actual person, also found in 19th-century records. The Seongyiseong model theory centers on the notion that both Chunhyang and Lee Doryeong existed in reality. This theory originated in 1965 with the discovery of a monument commemorating Seonganui. It is supported by three key elements: Seongyiseong’s father’s position as a Namwon magistrate, Seongyiseong’s covert role as a royal envoy in the Honam region, and the composition of the poem “Good Wine in a Golden Drink Cup” attributed to Seongyiseong during his covert mission. However, Kim Dong-wook emphatically asserted that Chunhyangjeon is a work of fiction, disputing this assertion. In 1999, Seol Seong-kyung reasserted the Seongyiseong model theory, which led to the production of a KBS documentary History Special. This gained momentum and was utilized by Bonghwa-gun for local tourism promotion. However, Seol Seong-gyeong only highlighted the parallels between Seongyiseong and Lee Mong-ryong, while overlooking the historical context of Gwanghallu as a guest house and exaggerates the significance of Seongyiseong’s visit to Gwanghallu on a snowy day as depicted in “Honam Amhaengrok. The History Special partially endorsed Seol Seong-gyeong’s assertions, further exploring the Seongyiseong model theory by referencing documents such as “Honam Amhaengrok” and Kyowamungo. As a result, the Seongyiseong model theory is exploited in local tourism marketing. Notably, on platforms such as Wikipedia, it is gaining traction as an established narrative. When people are deeply immersed in a storyworld, they often believe that fictional characters exist beyond the confines of the storyworld. The notion that Chunhyang and Lee Doryeong were real figures aims to connect this storyworld to actual world. However, it is important to recognize that the Seongyiseong model theory did not emerge from the voluntary immersion of the masses; rather, it was strategically constructed through cultural marketing strategies. Furthermore, Chunhyangjeon no longer captivates contemporary audiences. In this regard, the Seongyiseong model theory, stemming from the traditional Chunhyangjeon, demonstrates limitations as cultural marketing content.
