국문 초록

이 논문은 구한말부터 일제강점기가 끝나는 시점까지 판소리 권력화를 통한 일제의 조선인 식민화 시도를 살펴본 것이다. 당시 일제는 조선인들에게 본인들의 권력이 빠르게 투영되길 원했으나 쉽지 않았었다. 이에 조선인이 쉽게 접할 수 있는 문화를 택했었고 문화 중에서도 많은 사람이 모여 즐길 수 있는 판소리를 택하였다. 일제의 권력이 투영된 판소리는 그 자체가 권력을 지니고 있었다고 느껴질 정도로 막강한 힘과 영향력을 지니고 있었다. 하지만 이는 판소리 자체가 권력을 지닌 것이 아닌 일제의 권력 단체에 의해 판소리가 권력화의 형태로 변화한 것이다. 기존 학계에서는 일제강점기 판소리의 중요성을 다룬 연구 결과를 찾아 볼 수는 있으나, 이를 당시의 시대상 즉 권력과 엮지 않았으므로 그 중요성을 쉽게 파악하기 어려운 것이 사실이다. 판소리 권력화 시도의 결과는 구한말의 권번(券番) 공연문화와 일제강점기 후기 기예증 제도에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 이에 논문에서는 당시 권번의 공연문화와 기예증에서 어떤 식으로 권력화를 도출하고자 하였는지, 이는 어떤 식으로 소리꾼과 청자에게 영향을 끼치게 되었는지 논하고자 한다. 일제가 판소리에 권력을 투영하여 식민화시키고자 했던 것은 조선인이었다. 하지만 결과적으로 일제의 판소리 권력화를 통한 조선인 식민화 시도는 성공할 수 없었다. 이는 본문에서 자세하게 살펴볼 수 있으며, 판소리를 통한 조선인 식민화 시도가 아닌 판소리라는 공연문화 자체에 식민화를 시도한 것에 그쳤다고 논했다.

영문 초록

This paper delves into Japan’s colonization of Joseon through the strategic use of Pansori from the late Joseon Dynasty to the end of the Japanese colonial period. Japan sought to assert power over the Joseon people swiftly, a task met with challenges. As a solution, Japan used Pansori, an accessible cultural art form that could be enjoyed by broad audiences. The Pansori performances that reflected Japanese authority wielded immense influence, almost embodying that authority. However, this influence wasn’t inherent to Pansori but a result of manipulation by the Japanese authorities into a tool of empowerment. While previous research has explored the significance of Pansori during the Japanese colonial period, it often overlooked its historical connection to power dynamics. Consequently, understanding its significance within this context proves challenging. This paper explores the efforts to empower Pansori through the performance culture of the late Joseon Dynasty’s Gwonbeon and the post-Japanese colonial period’s Giyejeung system. It investigates the methods employed to achieve empowerment in these contexts and assesses their impact on both performers and audiences. Japan’s attempt to assert control over Pansori in order to colonize the Joseon people proved unsuccessful. This paper delves into this topic, revealing that the colonization effort was confined to the performance culture of Pansori rather than being an effective means of subjugation.
