초등학교 방과후 학교의 수업 프로그램을 활용한 주산교육에 관하여

국문 초록

유네스코(국제연합교육과학문화기구) 무형유산위원회 제8차 회의에서는 중국의‘주판을 활용한 수학적 계산의 지식 및 실천(knowledge and practices of mathematical calculation through the abacus)’을「인류무형문화유산목록(Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity)」’으로 2013년에 등재하였다. 우리나라에서의 주산교육은 제4 차 교육과정부터 중요성이 점차 감소하기 시작한 이후 제5차, 6차 교육과정에서는 주산교육이 일부 초등학교 수학 교과서와 상업고등학교의 교과목으로 다뤄진 것을 끝으로 제7차 교육과정 부터는 주산교육이 학교 정규 교육과정에 포함되지 않았다.‘동양의 지혜’로 까지 평가받던 주산교육은 컴퓨터의 발달과 함께 점차 관심 밖에 있었지만, 정규 교육과정과는 별도로 운영되기 시작한 「초등학교 방과후 학교의 수업 프로그램」을 활용하여 여전히 그 가치와 유용성에 대한 인식의 지속과 함께 학생들의 참여가 이어지고 있다는 점은 긍정적인 현상으로 볼 수 있다. 방과후 학교는, 학부모의 사교육비 경감의 취지와 돌봄 수요의 충족 등‘정규 교육과정의 보완 및 확대’를 통해서‘교육격차’를 해소하며, 돌봄 교실의 개념과 특기·적성을 계발할 수 있는 무한한 발전 가능성을 갖고 있다. 이러한 방과후 학교의 교육 프로그램을 활용하여 초등학생들이 숫자에 대한 친숙함을 갖고 수·연산 등 기초 연산 능력을 배양할 수 있도록 실효적인 만족도를 높일 수 있는 주산 교육이 되길 바란다.

영문 초록

In this study, in order to examine the importance of abacus education using the abacus, the history and flow of the abacus and the Chinese knowledge and use of abacus were recognized as intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) through a literature review. It was intended to provide an opportunity to re-aware of the current meaning of abacus learning, which is receiving attention again through after-school class programs in Korea. Abacus education, which was evaluated as ‘oriental wisdom’, gradually fell out of favor with the development of computers, but its value and usefulness are still recognized in the ‘After-School Programs in Elementary Schools’, which began to be operated separately from the regular curriculum. The continued participation of students is evaluated as a positive phenomenon. The main purpose of operating after-school is the educational system of‘complementing and expanding school educational functions’. It can be seen that it has unlimited development potential to resolve the ‘education gap’ by ‘supplementing and expanding the regular curriculum,’ such as the purpose of reducing parents ‘private education costs and meeting care needs, and to develop the concept, specialty, and aptitude of care classes. It is hoped that such after-school education programs will provide effective satisfaction so that elementary school students can develop basic computational skills such as numbers and calculations with familiarity with numbers.
