국문 초록

이 글은 고독한 죽음에 관한 기독교와 초기불교의 종교 간 대화를 통해 미래 사회를 위한 대안적 죽음 인식과 고독사의 신학적 성찰을 제시하는 데 주안점이 있다. 기독교 전통에서는 정신적 죽음과 절망의 상관성을 통찰한 쇠렌 키에르케고르(Søren Kierkegaard)의 『죽음에 이르는 병』(The Sickness Unto Death)에 나타난 죽음관을 통해 죽음 인식의 근원적 이해를 고찰한다. 고독한 죽음의 원형이라고 할 수 있는 예수의 죽음과 고대 사막교부의 ‘수행적 죽음’을 통해서 ‘죽음의 고독성’과 고독한 죽음의 인식론을 재조명한다. 초기불교의 전통에서는 『앙굿따라 니까야』(Aṅnguttara Nikāya)에 나타난 죽음의 종교철학적 성찰을 기반으로 ‘무유애’(無有愛)의 고독사를 고찰한다. 고독한 죽음의 승화를 위해 ‘닙바나’(Nibbāna), ‘유여의열반’(有餘依涅槃), ‘무여의열반’(無餘依涅槃), ‘아라한의 죽음’의 의미를 살펴본다. 고독사 현상을 정신적 죽음으로서의 ‘절망의 고독사’와 정신적 승화로서의 ‘수행적 죽음’으로 구별하여 해석한다. 기독교와 초기불교의 만남을 통해 고독한 죽음에 관한 종교철학적 성찰을 심화하고, 현대사회의 비극적 고독사를 극복하기 위한 죽음 복지 신학의 협력적 대안과 공동체적 돌봄의 실천 과제를 모색해 본다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to suggest an alternative epistemology of the solitary death for the future society through an inter-religious dialogue between Christianity and early Buddhism. The dialogue attempts to approach the notion of the solitary death from two points of view - ‘death of despair’ and ‘mindfulness of death.’ In the Christian tradition, we examine the correlation between death and despair in the work of Søren Kierkegaard’s The Sickness unto Death. We also look at the death of Jesus and the ancient Desert Fathers that can be the prototype of the mindfulness of death in a Christian way. In early Buddhism, we discuss the concept of death in Aṅnguttara Nikāya in relation to the doctrine of ‘dependent co-arising’, Nibbāna, and the mindfulness of death in a Buddhist way. This dialogue is intended to present theological alternatives on the concept of solitary death in emphasizing the importance of the welfare of death and the practical tasks of community in order to overcome the tragic death of solitude.
