교회 성장과 쇠퇴의 관점에서 살펴 본 한국교회의 근본주의와 체험주의

비슷한 시기에 미국에서 발흥한 개신교 근본주의와 체험주의(오순절 성령운동)는 신학적으로 상호 배타적일 수밖에 없는 요소를 내포하기 있기에 발생 초기부터 긴장과 갈등이 심하였다. 시간이 흐르면서 이 둘의 관계에 다소 변화가 일기는 하지만 본질적으로 서로 다른 신학적 특성으로 인해 이 둘의 공존이나 융합은 쉽지 않은 일이었다. 이와 유사한 모습이 한국교회에서도 나타나긴 하나 이는 주로 학계에서 일어난 일이었고 현장 목회에서는 둘 간의 혼재 혹은 결합의 모습이 더 많이 나타났다. 이것은 특히 교회 성장을 제일의 목표로 삼고 추구하는 과정에서 일어났다. 그리고 이를 뒤에서 도운 배경으로 한국 종교 문화의 특징인 종교 혼합주의, 피터 버거가 언급한 ‘시장 상황’ 그리고 개신교 보수 교계의 정치 참여의 문제 등이 있었다. 본 논문은 한국교회 목회 현장에서 근본주의와 체험주의 간의 상호 공존의 모습을 띠게 된 이유와 배경을 분석하였다. 그리고 이를 한국교회의 성장 및 둔화 현상과 관련시키면서 과거 한국교회의 급속한 성장과 오늘날의 성장 침체의 원인을 탐색해 보았다.

영문 초록

Protestant fundamentalism and experientialism (Pentecostalism), which arose at a similar time in the United States, existed in relation to one another in a state of tension and conflict from their beginning because they contained mutually exclusive elements in theology. Although the relationship between the two has changed somewhat over time, coexistence or convergence between them was not easy to occur due to the essentially different theological characteristics. A similar situation occurred in Korean churches, but mainly within an academic setting. At the level of pastoral ministry, there was more mixture or combination of the two. This happened in the process of pursuing church growth as the first goal of the church. And the background supporting this development was religious syncretism - a salient characteristic of Korean religious culture, the “market situation” mentioned by Peter Berger, and the issue of conservative Protestant groups’ participation in politics. This paper analyzes the reasons and backgrounds for the coexistence or intermixing of Protestant fundamentalism and experientialism in the pastoral field of the Korean church. In addition. Insights from this analysis will be related to the growth and slowdown of Korean churches, the causes of the rapid growth of Korean churches in the past and the stagnation of growth today.
