국문 초록

빌립보서 3:2-4:1에서 바울은 회심 전후 달라진 자신의 배경과 경험을 내세워 빌립보 교회가 적대자를 멀리하고, 바울과 같은 믿음을 갖도록 빌립보 교회를 설득한다. 설득을 위하여 자신의 배경과 회심 전후 성격과 자질을 예로 제시하는 바울의 주장은 수사학의 이토스 논증법과 관련된다. 본고는 빌립보서 3장의 바울의 이토스 분석을 위하여 고전과 현대의 이토스 이론을 살펴보고, 교회 상황에서 바울이 주장하는 이상적 이토스는 예수 그리스도 안에서 발견되는 성격임을 이해한다. 바울은 어떤 유대인과 비교해도 뒤지지 않는 회심 전 유대 경력과 율법에 대한 지식을 강조하여 율법에 대한 그의 비판이 신뢰할 만한 것임을 주장한다. 그리고 회심 후 예수의 십자가와 부활을 따라 변화된 자신의 믿음과 목표를 설명하여 예수 그리스도의 이토스를 따라가는 자신의 이토스를 논증한다. 이러한 바울의 주장은 적대자보다 바울을 따라 예수를 본받는 삶이 더 가치 있다고 빌립보 교회를 설득한다. 바울은 빌립보 교회가 자신처럼 그리스도를 “함께 본받는 자”(συμμιμητής)가 되길 권면한다. 이러한 권면은 빌립보 교회에서 바울의 우위를 주장하지 않고, 예수 그리스도와 빌립보 교회를 연결하는 중계자로서 바울의 성격을 나타낸다. 그리고 빌립보 교회와 바울은 그리스도 안에서 형제 관계임을 강조한다. 예수 그리스도의 이토스를 공유하는 형제 관계를 증명함으로 바울은 적대자의 위협을 극복하고, 빌립보 교인과 함께 예수 그리스도 안에서 굳건히 서는 교회를 이룩할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

In Philippians 3:2-4:1 using Paul’s own racial and religious background and experiences before and after conversion, Paul’s argument to persuade the Philippian church to shun his opponents and to have the same faith as he does shows Paul’s ethos argument in its rhetorical form. In order to understand the meainging of ethos as it applies in Philippians 3, the theory of ethos in classical rhetoric is reviewed. Through modern biblical rhetoric critics, we gain understanding into church rhetorical contexts and the ideal ethos in Paul’s letters, namely Jesus Christ. Paul’s experience in Judaism before conversion was extensive compared to any other adversary in the Philippian church. As a result, Paul’s understanding and criticism of the law can be viewed as reliable. And by explaining the changed faith and goal following the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ after conversion, demonstrates his own ethos as one who follows the ethos of Jesus Christ. This change of Paul’s ethos proves to the Philippian church that a life imitating Jesus is one that also follows Paul, rather than one of Paul’s opponents, is the best way. Paul urges the Philippian church to “join in imitating” (συμμιμητής) Christ like he does himself. With this argument, Paul does not assert his superiority in the Philippian church, but connects Jesus Christ and the Philippian church. Pauls’ work in connecting the two explains his character as a mediator, and emphasizes that the Philippian church and himself have a brotherly relationship in Christ. When the brotherhood that shares the ethos of Jesus Christ is revealed, Paul will be able to overcome the threat of the enemy in the Philippian church and build the Philippian church that stands firm in Jesus Christ together.
