국문 초록

본고는 燕行使臣의 燕行日記, 平壤監司宴會圖(箕城圖) 그림, 그리고 판소리 ‘제비노정기’ 녹음이라는 세 가지 재료를 해석하여 19세기 판소리의 모습을 재구성한 것이다. 19세기 판소리의 구체적인 실상을 보여주는 자료는 매우 적다. 대부분의 판소리 자료는 20세기 이후에 축적되었고, 그것도 구전의 과정을 거쳐 전해왔기 때문에 결정적인 증거능력을 갖기는 어렵다. 연행사신의 연행록은 직접 판소리 공연 현장을 보고 남긴 당대의 기록이므로 매우 강력한 증거능력을 지니고 있으며, 때로는 상식을 뛰어넘는 새로운 정보를 제공한다. 이를 통해 보면 19세기 서도지역의 판소리 시장이 의외로 규모가 컸음 알 수 있다. 평양 같은 대도시와 연행사신이 머물던 서도 지역은 소리광대들의 중요한 공연 시장이었다. 각종 연행록을 살펴보면, 연행사신의 각종 잔치가 광대들의 중요한 활동무대였음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 연행사신에 대한 공연 경험은 판소리의 ‘제비노정기’에 고스란히 지층처럼 축적되어 있다. 한편 ‘평양감사연회도’와 같은 풍속화 병풍은 판소리가 연행되는 모습을 잘 담고 있다. 서도 지역에서 이러한 병풍이 많이 그려진 것은 공연시장 기반이 단단하였음을 보여준다. 조선조 판소리의 주된 수요층은 무반들이었으며, 소리광대는 이들을 찾아서 끊임없이 이동하면서 공연을 했다. 무반들이 많이 있던 관북 지역은 판소리의 중요한 시장이었다. 20세기 이후 광대들은 자신의 지역에서 붙박이로 소리하기 시작하면서 판소리의 지역적 특징이 짙게 나타나기 시작하였고, 지금과 같은 계면조 음악이 성행하게 되었다.

영문 초록

This study presents a recomposition of the 19th century pansori (traditional Korean genre of vocal and percussion music) on the basis of the analysis of Joseon diplomats' Beijing travelogue, painting of Pyeongyang Mayor's Inauguration Ceremony, and pansori Heungbo-ga song's travelogue on swallows flying to Joseon from China. There are scanty data on the 19th century pansori. Most of pansori data were built after the 20th century, and that through oral transfer, making them less evidence-based. Joseon diplomats' travelogues on Beijing describes then actual pansori performances, making it very evidence-based, and even offer new, fresh information on pansori. Through the travelogue, it is learned that the size of the 19th pansori market in the Pyeongan-do and Hwanghae-do provinces was very large. Large cities like Pyeongyang and the said provinces where Joseon diplomats stayed provided an important performance site for pansori singers. According to various Beijing travelogues, various feasts for Joseon diplomats became important performing stages for pansori singers. Such Joseon diplomats' experience in performances well permeated in the pansori Heungbo song's travelogue on swallows flying to Joseon from China. Folding screens featuring genre paintings, such as Pyeongyang Mayor's Inauguration Ceremony, well depict the pansori performance. The fact that such many folding screens were produced in the said provinces suggests that the performance markets were well established there. The major pansori audience of Joseon was high-ranking military personnel, and pansori performers continued to visit them to perform as they traveled. The northern part of the Korean Peninsula, where soldiers and high-ranking military personnel lived, constituted a major pansori market. After the late 20th century, as pansori performers began to perform in their respective regions, this created unique regional pansori characteristics, triggering the creation of the present-day Jeolla-do style music.
