국문 초록

본고의 일차적인 목적은 戱臺, 協律協律社의 명칭과 개념을 파악하여, 관련 자료들에 대한 해석을 바로잡는 데에 있다.최남선의 언급 이후로, 협률사에 대한 연구사 안에서의 ‘戱臺’는 쟁점의 중심인 ‘그 공연장’을 가리키는 고유명사로 간주되어 왔다. 그러나 희대는 元代로까지 거슬러 올라가는 중국의 대표적인 공연장 양식을 가리키는 용어이자, 현대의 사전에도 공연장의 의미로 등재된 단어이다. 우리나라에도 연희 공연을 위한 공간이 오래 전부터 존재하였으나, 희대와 같은 양식의 공연장은 없었던 것으로 생각된다. 그런데 최남선과 이후의 자료들이 설명하는 ‘그 공연장’의 양식이 희대의 기본적인 특성에 부합한다. 따라서 이 공연장을 고유의 명칭으로서가 아니라 건물의 양식에 따라 희대라 칭했을 것이며, 그 앞에 ‘최초의’ 혹은 ‘유일의’라는 수식어를 붙일 수도 있었던 것이라 추정할 수 있다.한편 ‘協律’이란 용어는 ‘종합적 음악(연희 포함) 연행 및 그에 대한 관리나 운영’이란 의미의, 특정한 시대에 제한되지 않는 대단히 포괄적이면서도 일반적인 개념어이다. 따라서 協律社라고 하는 명칭 또한 그러한 협률의 일반성을 기반으로 생긴 것이다. 그러므로 협률과 협률사의 개념을 구체적으로 파악하는 작업은 19세기 말 ~ 20세기 초중반의 극장사판소리사창극사 등의 전개를 이해하는 데에 필요한 일차적 단계에 해당한다 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Names and Concepts, related with Hyeopyulsa in the Early 20th CenturyLee, Tae HwaThe primary goals of this study were to understand the names and concepts of Heedae, Hyeopyul and Hyeopyulsa right and to rectify the previous interpretations of the related data right. Since the comment by Choi Nam-seon, “Heedae” has been regarded as a proper noun referring to “the performing place,” which is the very center of controversy, within the framework of research into the Hyeopyulsa. But the fact is that Heedae is a term meaning the representative Chinese type of a performing place, whose origin traces back to the Yuan Dynasty. The modern dictionary also defines the term as a performing place. Although it's been widely recognized that Korea had a place for play performance almost throughout the history, it doesn't seem like there was one like Heedae. But “the performing place” described by Choi Nam-seon and the following materials corresponds to the fundamental characteristics of Heedae in terms of style. Thus the performing place was not treated as a proper noun but as a common term for an architectural style. It's estimated that they were able to add a modifier such as “the very first” or “the unique” to the term. The term “Hyeopyul” means “comprehensive musical performance(including a play) and the related management or operation” It's not restricted to certain periods, being an extremely comprehensive and general conceptual term. It's created based upon the title Hyeopyulsa or the generality of Hyeopyul, which implies that examining the complicated changes to Hyeopyulsa in details will help promote an understanding of the historical development of the theater, Pansori, and Korean classical opera from the late 19th century to the early and mid 20th century.
