이눌서 선교사(William D. Reynolds, 1867-1951)의 생애와 신론 연구

국문 초록

본고에서 우리는 한국 장로교 선교사로서 다방면에서 헌신하고 기여했던 이눌서(William D. Reynolds)의 생애를 개략적으로 살펴보는 일과 그의 『신학공과』(1916)를 분석 개관하는 작업을 수행해 보았다. II절에서 45년간 한국에서 수행된 그의 선교 사역을 전주를 중심한 호남지역의 개척 선교와 목회 사역, 한글성경 구역과 개역 번역 작업, 평양 장로회신학교 교수 사역, 그리고 다방면의 문서사역 등으로 나누어서 개관해 보았다. III절에서 우리는 이눌서 선교사의 『신학공과』의 내용을 분석 고찰해 보았는데, 이눌서의 『신학공과』는 90쪽의 소책자이고 공과의 이름을 가지고 있어 신학적인 전공 서적이라고 하기는 어렵다. 20쪽 분량은 성경관에 할애했는데, 이는 이어질 신지식의 근거로서 성경에 대한 적절한 논의였다고 사료된다. 이눌서는 이어지는 신론을 전개함에 있어 당시 개혁주의 신론에서 다루어졌던 주제들인 하나님의 속성들, 삼위일체, 예정, 창조와 섭리 등을 요점 정리하는 형식으로 다루었음을 살펴보았다. 간혹 교리사나 신학사적인 언급들이 있기는 하지만, 대체로 요점들을 제시하고 나서 전거 구절이 되는 성경 구절을 열거하거나 때때로 웨스트민스터 소요리문답의 문항을 지시하는 형식으로 자신의 요점들의 근거 제시를 하고 있다. 『신학공과』에 대한 분석 개관 작업을 통해서 우리가 확인하게 된 것은 이눌서의 교재는 현재 기준에서 보자면 신학 교재라고 평가하기에 초보적인 수준이지만, 당시 선교 초기 한국 상황에서는 적절하고 적실했다고 평가해줄 수가 있다고 사료된다.

영문 초록

In this paper present study, we have briefly examined the life of William D. Reynolds, a Korean Presbyterian missionary who devoted himself and made contributions in various fields. We have also analyzed and reviewed his Notes on Evidences of Christianity and Theology Proper (『신학공과』, 1916). In Section II, we analyzed his 45 years of missionary work in Korea. In Section III, we analyzed and reviewed the contents of Reynolds’s Notes on Evidences of Christianity and Theology Proper, Reynolds’s textbook on theology proper is a 90-page small booklet with a name that indicates to study lessons, so it is difficult to say that it is a theological textbook. Twenty pages were devoted to the view of the Bible, which is considered to be an appropriate discussion of the Bible as a basis for the cognitio Dei that will follow. In developing his Theology Proper, the study of God, Reynolds analyzed the themes addressed in Reformed Theology of the time, including the attributes of God, the Trinity, predestination, creation, and providence. He approached these topics by summarizing the main points. Although Reynolds sometimes includes historical references to doctrine or theology, he typically presents his ideas and then lists the supporting biblical verses. On occasion, he may also indicate the relevant items from the Westminster Shorter Catechism to show the basis for his points. What we have confirmed through the analysis and overview of Reynolds’s Notes on Evidences of Christianity and Theology Proper is that his textbook is at a rudimentary level to be evaluated as a theological textbook by current standards, but it can be evaluated as appropriate and adequate in the early days of missionary work at the time in Korea.
