<춘향전>의 봉건적 낭만성

국문 초록

이 논문은 이도령과 춘향의 사랑 이야기인 <춘향전>이 상하 모든 계층에서 사랑받을 수 있었던 이유를 찾는 데 목적을 두었다. 논의의 전제로 <춘향전>은 근대 이전의 작품이며, 당대의 사회 질서 안에서 향유되었다는 점에서, 그리고 이 작품이 대중적인 작품이라는 점에서 봉건 시대의 사고방식이 담겨 있을 것으로 보았다. 이를 증명하기 위해 <춘향전>의 주요 인물들의 이념적 지향을 살펴보았다. 이도령과 변학도는 대립적인 인물로 등장하지만, 이들의 차이는 봉건 권력을 어떻게 사용했는가에 있으며, 이들의 의식을 지배하는 것은 봉건 질서였다. 춘향이나 남원부민들, 월매, 방자 역시 이러한 봉건 질서 안에서 사유하고 행동하였다. 춘향이 자신을 지키기 위해 사용한 논리는 유교 질서에서 가져온 것이고, 남원부민들 역시 봉건 질서를 올바르게 사용하여 부정한 변학도를 징치하는 이도령을 기다렸다. 월매의 기회주의적인 속성은 그녀가 어머니라는 위치를 고려해야 하며, 이도령을 조롱하는 방자의 모습은 이도령이 탕아적인 모습을 보일 때만 작동한다. 이처럼 <춘향전>의 인물들은 봉건 질서를 인정하고 있으며, 불합리한 봉건 권력의 작동 때문에 생기는 삶의 질곡을 극복하려 한다. 그러므로 <춘향전>의 정치성은 봉건 질서에서 벗어나지 않는다. <춘향전>이 봉건 체제를 거부하는 것이 아니라고 해서 의미가 격하되는 것은 아니다. <춘향전>의 향유자들은 봉건 질서 안에서 자신들의 어려움을 극복하고자 했으며, 그것은 봉건 질서가 올바르게 작동하는 것이었다. 따라서 양반 계층이나 민중들 모두 이 작품을 향유할 수 있었다. 민중들은 봉건 질서가 올바르게 작동하여 자신들의 앞에 닥친 부조리한 삶이 해소되기를 바랐고, 양반 계층들은 이도령을 자신과 동일시하여 이상적인 양반이 되고자 했다. 즉, <춘향전>은 봉건 질서 안에서 정치적 이상향을 낭만적으로 풀어낸 대중적인 이야기로 규정할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper was to find out why Chunhyangjeon(춘향전), a love story between Lee Doryeong(이도령) and Chunhyang(춘향), could be loved by all classes. As a premise of the discussion, Chunhyangjeon was a pre-modern work, enjoyed in the social order of the time, and it was considered to contain the feudal mindset in that this work was a popular work. To prove this, the ideological orientation of the main characters in Chunhyangjeon was examined. Lee Doryeong and Byun Hakdo(변학도) appeared as opposing figures, but the difference between them was how they used feudal power, and it was the feudal order that dominated their consciousness. Chunhyang, Namwon residents(남원부민), Wolmae(월매), and Bangja(방자) also thought and acted in this feudal order. The logic used by Chunhyang to protect her was taken from the Confucian order, and the Namwon residents also waited for Lee Do-ryeong, who used the feudal order correctly to imprison the unjust Byeon Hakdo. Wolmae’s opportunistic appearance should consider her position as Chunhyang’s mother. The appearance of Bangja mocking Lee Doryeong only works when Lee Doryeong shows the appearance of a warmonger. As such, the characters in Chunhyangjeon acknowledge the feudal order and try to overcome the hardships of life caused by the unreasonable operation of feudal power. Therefore, the political nature of Chunhyangjeon does not deviate from the feudal order. Just because Chunhyangjeon does not reject the feudal system does not mean that its meaning is downgraded. The people who enjoyed Chunhyangjeon tried to overcome their difficulties in the feudal order, and it was that the feudal order worked properly. Therefore, both the yangban and the people could enjoy this work. The people wanted the feudal order to work properly to resolve the absurd life ahead of them, and yangban wanted to identify Lee Doryeong with themselves to become an ideal aristocrat. In other words, Chunhyangjeon can be defined as a popular story that romanticizes political ideals within the feudal order.
