Augustine’s Interpretation of Romans 5:12 and Its Significance for His Controversy with Pelagius Regarding Original Sin

In this article, the author argues that Augustine's view following Paul's assertion in the interpretation of Romans 5:12 (because of Adam’s sin, all human beings are born with original sin) was not simply a grammatical interpretation, but based on the biblical context. Augustine’s interpretation is much more appropriate and correct than Pelagius’ (Adam's transgression only harmed him, not the whole humankind). Augustine’s view is reinforced by a debate with Pelagius about original sin. Pelagius did not notice the connection between Adam and many men, which is clearly expressed in Romans 5:18-19 and 1 Corinthians 15:22. In this respect, Pelagius' view must be rejected. Because his view ignores the biblical context. Thus, the context of Romans 5:12-21 and other passage 1 Corinthians 15:22 supports Augustine's interpretation more clearly. Also, Augustine's view to Adam's original sin must be considered in relation to the emphasis on Christ's grace to remove original sin. The grace of Christ heals all people's original sin originated from Adam's transgression. Consequently, Pelagius' argument to ignore that all men became sinners through Adam's sin ignores the grace of Christ in saving sinners. Augustine's interpretation of Romans 5:12 is meaningful in that it emphasizes that the grace of Jesus Christ in saving sinner influences on the entire human race.

이 글에서 필자는 로마서 5장 12절의 해석에 있어서 바울의 주장을 따르는 어거스틴의 견해(아담의 범죄로 모든 인간이 원죄를 지니고 태어난다)는 단순히 문법적 해석이 아니라 성경적 맥락에 기초하여 그 구절을 이해했다는 점에서 펠라기우스의 주장(아담의 범죄는 그 자신에게 해를 끼쳤을 뿐 인류 전체에 대한 것이 아니다)보다 훨씬 적절하며 옳은 것임을 주장한다. 이러한 어거스틴의 견해는 원죄에 관한 펠라기우스와의 논쟁에 의해 강화되고 있다. 로마서 5장 18절과 19절의 말씀과 고린도전서 15장 22절에 분명히 나타나 있는 말씀은 아담과 많은 사람이 연결되어 있음을 분명히 한다. 이런 점에서 펠라기우스의 견해는 성경적 맥락을 무시하기에 거부되어야 한다. 따라서 로마서 5장 12절은 아담과 그리스도를 다루고 있는 로마서 5장 12-21절의 맥락에서 그리고 다른 성경 구절(고전 15:22)을 고려하여 읽을 때, 더 분명하게 어거스틴의 해석을 지지하고 있다. 더욱이 어거스틴이 말하는 아담의 원죄에 대한 중요성은 원죄를 제거하는 그리스도의 은혜에 대한 강조와 관련하여 읽어야 한다. 왜냐하면 그리스도의 은혜는 아담의 범죄로 인한 모든 사람의 원죄를 치유하기 때문이다. 따라서 아담의 범죄함으로 모든 사람이 죄인이 되었다는 사실을 무시하는 펠라기우스의 주장은 죄인들을 구원하시는 그리스도의 은혜를 무시하는 것이다. 로마서 5장 12절에 대한 어거스틴의 해석은 죄인을 구원하시는 예수 그리스도의 은혜가 인류 전체에 미치는 것임을 강조한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
