제임스 에글린턴의 『바빙크 비평적 전기』 한역본에 대한 서평적 고찰

국문 초록

2021년에 전세계적으로 헤르만 바빙크의 소천 100주년을 기념했다. 이 시기에 맞추어 에딘버러의 제임스 에글린턴이 바빙크에 대한 새로운 전기를 출간하여, 바빙크 연구자들의 큰 반향을 불러 일으켰다. 한 신학자의 사상을 잘 이해하기 위해서는 그의 성장 배경과 역사적인 배경을 잘 알아야 한다는 것은 널리 인정된 사실이기에, 바빙크에 대한 학술적인 전기가 출간된 것은 진심으로 환영할 만한 일이다. 본고에서는 에글린턴의 바빙크 전기에 대한 서평적 논의를 제시했다. 우선 바빙크 연구에 있어 에글린턴과 그의 제자들의 중요성에 대해서 언급한 후에(1), 에글린턴 이전에 출간된 여러 전기들에 대해서 간략하게 살펴 보았다(2). 바빙크 사후에 곧바로 전기들이 나오기 시작했지만, 학문적인 가치를 가지는 전기는 롤프 브렘머(Rolf H. Bremmer)의 『헤르만 바빙크와 그의 동시대인들』(1966)이 유일무이했다고 평가된다. 3절에서는 에글린턴의 『바빙크 비평적 전기』의 기본 입장, 구성과 기여점들에 대해 살펴보고, 보완해야 할 몇 가지 문제점들에 대해서도 지적해 보았다. 에글린턴은 바빙크에 관련된 1, 2차 문헌들을 광범위하게 섭렵하고, 당시의 신문기사들, 의회 연설문, 그리고 아카이브 자료들을 연구하여 학술적으로 표준적인 전기를 완성했다. 그러한 과정을 통해 이전의 전기들의 문제점들도 여러 면에서 수정 보완할 수가 있었기에, 이제 당분간 에글린턴의 바빙크 전기만으로도 바빙크의 배경 연구에는 충족하다고 할 수가 있다.

영문 초록

In 2021, the 100th anniversary of Hermann Bavinck’s death had been celebrated worldwide. Around this time, James Eglinton of Edinburgh University published a new biography of Bavinck, which caused a great sensation among Bavinck researchers. It is a widely accepted fact that in order to understand a theologian's thoughts and ideas thoroughly, one must know the historical background of his life, so the publication of an academic biography of Bavinck is truly welcome. This paper presents a book review discussion of Eglinton’s biography of Bavinck . First, after mentioning the importance of Eglinton and his Ph. D. disciples in Bavinck’s research (section 1), I briefly examined several biographies published before Eglinton’s work (section 2). Although the biographical writings on Bavinck began to appear immediately after Bavinck’s death, Rolf H. Bremmer’s Herman Bavinck and his Contemporaries (Herman Bavinck en zijn tijdgenoten, 1966) is considered to be the only biography that has academic value. In section 3 I examined the basic position and its structure and contributions of Eglinton’s Critical Biography of Bavinck, and pointed out some problems that need to be revised and supplemented. Eglinton extensively covered the primary and secondary literature related to Bavinck, and studied newspaper articles, congressional speeches, and archival sources of the time to complete an academically standard biography. Through such a process, the problems of previous biographies could also be corrected and supplemented in many ways, so for the time being, Eglinton’s Bavinck biography alone can be said to be sufficient for the background study of Bavinck.
