17세기 잉글랜드 청교도 장로파와 회중파의 신학적 연속성과 비연속성

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 현재 개혁신학을 따르는 한국장로교회 안에서 청교도들에 대한 오해를 해소하는 것이다. 최근 16, 17세기 청교도들을 장로파와 회중파로 나누고 교회론적인 분류인 이들의 차이를 그 외의 신학 전반의 불연속성으로 확장하려는 시도가 이어지고 있다. 이에 본 논문은 더 정확한 학술적 논의를 위해 장로파와 회중파 청교도들이 형성하고 발전되었으며, 각각 자신들의 신앙고백을 만들었던 16, 17세기 잉글랜드의 장로파와 회중파 청교도들을 비교한다. 먼저 청교도 장로파와 회중파의 형성 과정을 살피는 과정을 통해 이들이 형성되었던 16세기에는 국교회의 개혁이라는 공통 목표 달성을 위해서 각각의 그룹이 서로 협력할 뿐만 아니라 차이보다는 공통점에 더 큰 관심을 가졌다는 사실을 확인한다. 다음으로 청교도 장로파와 회중파를 극단적으로 구별하는 이들이 범하는 대표적인 오류가 있는데, 이는 장로파와 회중파가 각각의 그룹 내에서 신학적인 균질성을 가졌다는 것과 이 사실에서 필연적으로 흘러나오는 결과로서 각각의 그룹이 신학적으로 분명하게구별된다는 오해다. 그럼에도 이 두 그룹 사에는 차이점도 엄연히 존재하는데, 그것은 바로 명칭에서 볼 수 있는 교회론적 차이점이다. 하지만 이 역시도 장로파와 회중파를 나누는 기준은 될 수 있을지라도 각각의 그룹 내에서는 여전히 다양한 의견이 공존하고 있었다. 이와 같은 교회론적 불연속성에도 불구하고 장로파와 회중파에는 상당한 유사성이 존재하는데, 심지어 그들의 교회론 안에서 일정한 유사성을 발견할 수 있다. 그뿐만 아니라 교회론 이외의 분야에서는 신학적으로 장로파와 회중파를 구분하기도 어려울 뿐더러 각각의 신앙고백을 통해서 볼 때에는 상당한 연속성을 발견할 수 있다. 더 나아가서 17세기에 접어들어 웨스트민스터 회의 이전까지는 장로파와 회중파가 어떤 이들이 상상하는 것과 같이 서로를 적대적으로 대하여 대립하기 보다는 오히려 협력하는 모습이 두드러지게 나타났음을 알 수 있다. 물론 청교도혁명 이후 두 그룹은 상당한 적대적인 관계를 가지게 되었는데, 이는신학적 차이보다는 정치적인 이유 때문이 더 강하다. 결국 16, 17세기 잉글랜드 청교도 장로파와 회중파는 교회론을 제외하고는 신학적으로 구분할 수 없으며, 이러한 시도는 역사적 증거와 상반된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to resolve some currently arising misunderstandings about the Puritans in Korea. Some attempts have recently been made by some scholars and pastors, which sharply divide the sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Puritans into Presbyterians and Congregationalists according to their theological system and then to expand the difference beyond their ecclesiology even to other doctrines such as doctrines of salvation. This paper compares Presbyterians and Congregationalist Puritans in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for more accurate academic discussion. Through examining the process of the formation of the Puritan Presbyterians and Congregationalists in the sixteenth century, it will be proved that each group not only cooperated with each other in order to achieve the common goal of reforming the Anglican Church, but also that they shared more commonalities than differences. It is undeniable, however, that their views on church, especially church polity, differed from each other in some aspects. Nevertheless, they also shared in considerable similarities found even in their ecclesiologies, though after the Puritan Revolution, the two groups developed a significant antagonistic relationship, which seems more rooted in political reasons than in theological differences. In conclusion, the sixteenth-and seventeenth-century English Puritan Presbyterians and Congregationalists were barely indistinguishable in their theological systems except for ecclesiology, and those attempts to theologically separated them from each other except for ecclesiology is contrary to historical evidences.
