국문 초록

독도의 영유권 문제를 둘러싸고 한국과 일본은 첨예하게 대립하고 있다. 한국은 독도를 한국의 고유영토임을 천명하고 있고, 일본은 시마네현 고시를 바탕으로 일본의 영토라고 끊임없이 주장하고 있다. 최근 일본은 오래전부터 독도를 일본의 영토라고 자국 내에서 교육을 통해 학생들을 교육했으며, 이제는 이러한 영유권 주장을 국제 사회를 대상으로 확산시키고 있다. 한국은 이에 맞서 독도에 대한 우리 영유권 주장을 뒷받침하는 다양한 주제의 연구 논리를 끊임없이 개발하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 20세기 초반까지 일본의 고지도와 사료에 나타난 독도 명칭 사용에서의 일관성 결여와 이를 반영한 일본 고지도의 혼란스러운 독도의 위치와 명칭 사용의 예를 살펴보았다. 더불어 최근 발굴한 19세기 중후반에 제작된 서양의 다양한 국가에서 제작된 동해에 해양경계선이 그려진 지도를 분석하였다. 독도 영유권 주장에 있어 좋은 자료로 활용될 수 있는 발굴된 대다수 지도는 독도를 한국의 영토로 일관성 있게 표시했다. 해양경계선이 그려진 유럽 각국에서 제작된 지도는 일본에도 전파되어 일본의 다양한 용도의 지도 제작에도 활용되었고, 그 결과 일본 지도에서 독도는 한국의 영토로 인정하는 지도가 20세기 초 제작 유포되었다. 서양과 일본에서 제작된 해양경계선이 표시된 지도는 몇 가지 유형으로 나뉘는데, 이 논문에서는 그 유형을 분석하였다. 19세기 후반 세계의 지리정보를 바탕으로 제작된 해양경계선이 그려진 고지도를 볼 때 당시 지도제작자에게는 독도가 한국의 영토라는 사실이 상식으로 통했다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 독도와 해양경계선에 관한 상호관계의 연구는 이제 그 시작점에 있고, 이 논문을 통해 그 연구 방향의 가능성을 제시해보았다. 앞으로 이 주제의 연구를 심화하여 독도의 한국의 영토임을 증명하는 데 도움이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.

영문 초록

Korea and Japan are in sharp conflict over the sovereignty over Dokdo. Korea declares that Dokdo is its own territory, and Japan continues to claim it as its territory based on the Shimane Prefecture Notice. Recently, Japan has been educating its students that Dokdo is Japanese territory for a long time, and now it is spreading this territorial claim to the international community. We are constantly developing the research logic of the subject. In this paper, I investigated at the lack of consistency in the use of names for Dokdo in Japanese old maps and historical documents until the early 20th century, and examples of confusing locations and names for Dokdo on Japanese old maps. Several maps with maritime boundaries drawn on the East Sea, produced in various Western countries in the mid-to-late 19th century, have recently been found. Most of the found maps, which can be used as good data for claiming sovereignty over Dokdo, consistently indicate Dokdo as Korean territory. Maps produced in European countries with maritime boundary lines spread to Japan and were used in the production of maps for various purposes in Japan. Maps with marine boundary lines produced in the West and Japan are divided into several types, and this paper analyzes the types. Looking at the old maps with maritime boundaries drawn based on world geographic information in the late 19th century, it was found that the fact that Dokdo was Korean territory was common sense to mapmakers at the time. The study of the interrelationship between Dokdo and the maritime boundary is now at the starting point, and through this article, the possibility of the research direction was suggested. It is hoped that further research on this topic will be helpful in proving that Dokdo is Korean territory.
