국문 초록

종교와 과학에 대한 선행 연구들은 주로 종교와 과학의 서구적 갈등 모델을 중심으로 각 세계관의 차이점을 조명해온 경향이 있다. 갈등 모델을 잠시 접어두고 구체적인 우리의 역사적 사례를 통해 종교와 과학에 대한 담론을 발굴하고 재검토할 필요가 있다. 특히 과학과 종교의 세계관과 담론이 교차하는 장소인 삶을 살아내는 인간에 대한 조명은 종교와 과학의 갈등 모델 하에서는 잘 이루어지지 않아 왔다. 본 연구는 미시적 접근 방식을 택하여 일제 강점기의 한 기독인 과학자에게서 종교와 과학에 관한 이해가 담론적으로 어떻게 표출되었는지 살펴보았다. 과학적 영농 교육과 농민의 기독교적 덕성, 도덕 함양을 위해 발행된 잡지, 『農民 生活』에서 활동한 과학자 조응천(曺應天, 1895-1979)의 삶과 글을 통해 그가 어떠한 과학과 종교관을 피력했는지 검토하고자 했다. 조응천의 경우, 종교적 신앙심과 그로부터 비롯된 이타적 결단이 오히려 과학적 탐구와 조선의 계몽화, 과학화를 위해 헌신하는 기반이 되었다. 그는 조선인으로서 조선 땅에서는 ‘조선을 위한’ 과학이어야만 진정한 가치를 발휘할 수 있다고 믿었다. 과학관과 종교관은 그의 사유 속에서 상호 영향 관계 속에 놓여있었으며 민족적 정체성 또한 이와 연관되어 있었다. 일제 강점기 과학적 조선과 조선적 과학을 위해 분투한 지식인의 삶 속에서 종교와 과학은 대립적 관계가 아닌 긴밀한 동반자적 관계였음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Previous studies on religion and science have mainly focused on the differences in their worldviews based on the Western conflict model between religion and science. However, an excessively confrontational interpretation could rather be a hindrance in recognizing the variety of historical realities. It is necessary to set aside this conflict model for a while and discover the discourses on the relationship between religion and science through concrete examples from our history. This study took a microscopic approach to examine how the understanding of religion and science was expressed discursively in a Christian scientist during the Japanese colonial period. Through the life and writings of Cho Eung-Cheon, a scientist who worked for the magazine Farmer’s Life published for scientific agriculture, Christian virtue, and moral cultivation of farmers, I attempted to analyze how he expressed his views of science and religion. In the case of Cho, his religious faith and the altruistic decision that resulted from these became the basis for his dedication to scientific research, enlightenment, and scientification of Joseon. He believed that the true value of science could be demonstrated only when it was developed ‘for Joseon’ in Joseon. His views of science and of religion were mutually influential in his thought and his national identity was also related to these. In the lives of intellectuals like Cho who struggled for scientific Joseon and Joseon’s science during the Japanese colonial period, it can be confirmed that religion and science were not in a conflicting relationship, but in a close partnership.
