조선 후기 평양성도 병풍의 성격과 기능

국문 초록

본고는 조선 후기 평양성도 병풍이 읍지 등의 문헌과 시문·악부 등의 문학 작품을 통해 집합적으로 형성되고 전승·확산된 평양의 역사·문화적 정체성을 시대의 변화상을 반영하며 시각화하고 있는 방식을 고찰하였다. 이 과정에서 조선 후기 평양성도 병풍이 小中華의 중심지로서 아름답고 풍요로우며 기자가 일으킨 것으로 전하는 문명화된 평양성의 모습을 표현하고, 문화적 자긍심을 표상한 것으로 이해할 수 있었다. 또한, 19세기에 나타난 평안감사를 주인공으로 한 행사 장면을 그린 평양성도 병풍들이 조선 후기 크게 유행한 신광수가 지은 ｢관서악부｣의 내용에 영향받았음을 밝혔다. 아울러, 평양성도 병풍이 평양의 역사와 문화적 정체성을 한눈에 파악할 수 있게 해주었을 뿐 아니라, 도시의 지리 정보를 제공하는 지도로서 복합적으로 기능하였음을 분석하였다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how screen paintings of Pyongyang of the late Joseon period visualized historical and cultural identities of the city, which were collectively formed and spread by gazetteers and works of literature, and reflected the quickly changing historical landscape. Screen paintings of Pyongyang displayed the city as a beautiful, abundant, and civilized place, emphasizing its status as the center of Little China - where Sage Gija (Jizi) had allegedly raised Korean civilization to the same level as China. In the 19th century, event scenes featuring the governor of Pyongan Province were included in screen paintings of Pyongyang. The scenes show the influence of Gwanseo akbu, famous song poems which were produced to commemorate the appointment of Che Je-gong as the governor of Pyongan Province by Sin Gwang-su. Lastly, this paper highlights the complex, dual functions of the Pyongyang screen paintings, serving both maps and pictorial images of historical and cultural identities of Pyongyang.
