윤동주의 창씨개명(創氏改名)

국문 초록

민족 저항시인으로 널리 알려진 윤동주의 삶에서 우리를 당혹스럽게 하는 것은 그가 창씨개명을 했다는 사실이다. 윤동주의 창씨개명은 연희전문 학적부의 관련 기록과 그의 시 ｢참회록｣ 등을 근거로, 창씨개명을 거부했으나 민족운동의 실천을 위한 일본 유학을 위해 어쩔 수 없이 했던 것으로 정리되었다. 그러나 윤동주의 창씨개명에 대한 기존의 논의는 호적부 등 관련 자료의 부족으로 연구가 충분히 이루어지지 못했으며, 연구의 전제가 되는 일제의 창씨개명 강요에 대한 연구와 인식 또한 충분하지 못하였기에 왜곡되어 알려진 것이었다. 창씨개명이 강요된 1940년을 전후하여 졸업한 연희전문 문과 학생들의 학적부와 졸업앨범의 창씨개명 관련 기록을 전수조사한 결과, 학적부 기록으로는 학생들의 창씨개명 여부와 시기 등을 분명하게 확인할 수 없었다. 따라서 연희전문 학적부의 창씨개명 관련 기록을 근거로 이루어지고 있는 윤동주의 창씨개명과 그의 작품「참회록」에 대한 기존의 해석은 다시 검토되어야 한다.

영문 초록

It’s perplexing that Yoon Dong-ju, a poet that symbolizes Korean national resistance, decided to accept the Chang Shi Gae Myung and obtain a new name in Japanese. To this day, explanations of Yoon’s Chang Shi Gae Myung have been based on relevant records in the Chosun Christian College register and Yoon’s poem . The explanations account for the decision as an inevitable one that was reluctantly made so that Yoon could study abroad in Japan and advance the national resistance movement. However, the existing discourse on Yoon’s Chang Shi Gae Myung could not be researched fully due to a lack of relevant materials. Furthermore, related information has been distorted due to the lack of studies and the strong perception of the Japanese imperialists’ enforcement of Chang Shi Gae Myung. Based on a complete reanalysis of the Chosun Christian College register of the liberal arts program as well as the graduation album records from the 1940s, when Chang Shi Gae Myung was enforced; it was found that the details of whether a student had accepted Chang Shi Gae Myung and when could not be properly verified. Examining the relevant records of the Chosun Christian College school register, the prevalent explanations regarding Yoon’s decision for Chang Shi Gae Myung should thus be questioned and reexamined.
