국문 초록

이 글에서는 항쟁에 참여하거나 목격했던 사람들의 일기와 구술 자료 등에서 드러나는 느낌과 감정을 통해 5·18을 다르게 이해하고 항쟁과정 속 느낌과 감정들이 삶과 세계관의 변화, 집합행동과 어떻게 관련되는지 살펴보고자 한다. 문학 분야를 제외하면 5·18연구에서 감정 및 느낌을 주제로 한 작업들은 거의 찾아보기 힘들다. 여전히 5·18에 대한 진상규명이 진행 중이고 공적인 차원의 진실 규명에서 통상 사적인 것으로 간주되는 감정과 느낌들은 충분히 주목받지 못하고 있다. 시민들의 항쟁 참여의 동기 중에서 감정들과 느낌들은 당대의 통념과 상식, 정서적 습속과 정상적 사회의식과 무관하지 않다. 사람들의 사고를 틀짓고 행동을 구속하는 개발독재 시대의 가치관과 습속이 항쟁이라는 비일상적 현실 속에서 비틀리고 분리된 것으로 이해될 수도 있었던 공포, 부끄러움, 분노와 겹쳐지면서 집합적 정동이 등장했다. 이 연구는 항쟁과 관련된 느낌과 감정들의 복합으로서 정동이 5·18의 중요한 유산임을 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

This article seeks to understand 5.18 (the May Uprising) differently through the feelings and emotions revealed in the diaries and oral materials of people who participated in or witnessed the protests, and examines how the feelings and emotions in the protest process relate to changes in life and worldview as well as collective action. Outside the field of literature, it is almost impossible to find works on emotions and feelings in the existing research on the May Uprising. Fact-finding about 5.18 is still in progress, and at the public level of truth-finding, emotions and feelings—which are usually considered private—are not receiving enough attention. Among the motives of citizens' participation in the uprising, emotions and feelings are not irrelevant to the prevailing notion and common sense, emotional customs, and normal social consciousness of the time. A collective affect emerged as fear, shame, and anger overlapped, which could have been understood as twisted and separated values and customs of the era of developmental dictatorship that framed people's thinking and restrained their actions in the extraordinary reality of the uprising. This study aims to reveal that affect—as a complex of feelings and emotions related to the uprising—is an important heritage of 5.18.
