내면화된 제국주의

국문 초록

39세의 T. S. 엘리엇이 미국 시민권을 포기하고 영국의 신민이 되었던 1927년 무렵, 대영제국은 인류 역사상 가장 큰 영토와 가장 많은 인구를 보유했으며, 군사적이며 경제적인 영향력은 전대미문일 만큼 지대했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 작품을 대영제국이나 이를 아우르는 서구의 제국주의와 연계지어 연구한 경우는 매우 드물다. 본 논문은 엘리엇이 평생 고쳐 쓰고 친구들과 공유했던 콜롬비아드를 제국주의와 연계지어 살펴보고자 한다. 만주 제이드카(Manju Jaidka)와 데이빗 치니츠(David Chinitz)를 포함한 몇 명의 비평가들은 엘리엇의 초기시 대부분이 그러한 것처럼 이 작품 역시 당대의 대중문화의 영향 하에 원시부족과 그들의 성을 희화화한 것이라고 주장하였다. 그렇지만 그들은 당대의 서구 대중문화가 실제로 서구 제국주의의 이데올로기의 산물이라는 점을 간과하였다. 이러한 점에 입각하여, 본 논문은 가장 미학적인 문예운동으로 제국의 식민지 정복과 지배로 인해서 발생한 끔찍한 현실과는 아무런 상관이 없다는 모더니즘을 대표하는 작가인 엘리엇의 콜롬비아드에 서구의 제국주의가 어떻게 내면화 되어 있는지 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

When T. S. Eliot renounced American citizenship and was naturalized as a British subject at the age of 39, in November 1927, the British Empire was the largest one both in terms of landmass and population in the world history, and its military and economic power remained unprecedented and unmatched. Since he did not mention the concrete reasons he became a citizen of the British Empire and he did not support explicitly it, there have never been proper researches or studies on his idea or attitudes towards the British Empire. This paper aims to research on his idea or attitudes towards it, including Western imperialism, and how imperialism was interiorized in the mind of Eliot, who was one of the representative writers of modernism which is known as the most aesthetic literary movement, and which has nothing to do with the atrocious realities of conquest and empire. While The Waste Land and his many reviews on anthropological researches show that his strong interest in the primitivism would be healthy, one of his improper rhymes, “The Columbiad,” shows an opposing idea against it. Though this work is not one of his major works, his contradictory attitude towards primitive people is revealed in it. A few critics, such as Manju Jaidka and David Chinitz, considered this work, like his early short poems, is written under the influence of contemporary popular culture. However, they ignored the fact that this burlesque is also written under the ideological influence of Western imperialism.
