국문 초록

네 사중주 각 편의 주요 제재를 형성하는 네 물질은 시의 주제를 전함에 있어 상호 의존하거나 다른 요소들을 보완하기도 한다. 그들은 모두 세계의 구성과 작동에 대한 헤라클레이토스의 이해에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 이 가운데 물은 엘리엇 작품의 가장 두드러진 제재로서 황무지, 재의 수요일 그리고 「J. 푸르프록의 사랑노래」를 포함하는 전작들에서 풍부하게 등장하고 있다. 엘리엇은 이 모든 작품들에서 물이 어떻게 죽음, 재생, 혹은 초월적 세계와 연결되는지를 보이고 있다. 「드라이 샐배이지즈」는 물의 모티프를 통해 어떻게 인간이 성육신을 경험하고 그 의미를 깨달을 수 있을지를 그린다. 엘리엇은 바다가 시간처럼 인간 존재의 시종(始終)을 통제한다는 점을 말하며 인간 삶이 신적 구원을 얻지 못하는 한 생로병사의 무의미한 고리에서 벗어날 수 없다는 점도 말한다. 하지만 엘리엇의 시에서 물은 궁극적인 가치나 권위를 부여받지 못하며 그 가치와 권위적 한계를 노정한다. 또한 물은 여성(성)과 많은 유사점을 갖는 것으로 나타나기도 한다.

영문 초록

The four elements, each of which accounts for the main subject matter or motif of the respective parts of Four Quartets, are interdependent on or supplementary of the others for the corroboration of the message the poem is intended to carry. They all come from Heraclitus’ understanding of how the world is constituted and operates. He assumes that earth changes into water in the rising phase while water into earth in falling; in each phase the relevant element qualifies the world then. Naturally, “The Dry Salvages,” where Eliot focuses on water, follows “East Coker,” the main element of which part is earth. However, the water motif is not a new entry in Four Quartets, but Eliot resorts to water for many similar associations in his previous works including The Waste Land, Ash Wednesday and earlier in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” Eliot tries to express in all of these works how water is associated with death or rebirth in both physical and symbolical senses “The Dry Salvages” addresses water, entailing various possible interpretations on how human beings can access the Incarnation and follow Its meaning. In the first movement of “Dry Salvages,” Eliot shows how a river regulates human life as an unavoidable and irresistible force in associations with his personal childhood experience. He proceeds to advise how the sea is parallel in its characteristics with time in that it contains human life and defies human efforts, ultimately reclaiming all the human existences. Human existence is allowed no breakthrough from the meaningless cycle of birth, decay and death if it finds no divine redemption. Eliot exhorts readers to know the timeless world and seek salvation from the time-bound existence. However, water is not accorded the ultimate value or status in Eliot’s poetry, where it shares many qualities with women or femininity.
