‘지눌의 돈오’에 대한 인식 고찰

국문 초록

이 글은 돈오의 체험성 여부에 대한 의문과 관련 문제의식에서 비롯되었다. 지눌 수행체계의 기초와 중심을 돈오점수로 보는 동시에, 지눌의 돈오 자체는 인식의 범주를 벗어난 반조에 의한 전의적 체험[見自本性]이라 판단한다. 『선문정로』출간이 불러온 돈점논쟁은 지눌의 돈오에 대한 다양한 인식들을 산출한다. 지해로 확정하려는 시각과 지해와는 다른 것으로 보는 시각이 중심이라 할 수 있다. 논쟁은 해오의 성격을 규정하는 데 집중한다. 이후 지눌의 돈오를 두 차원으로 구분해 읽어보자는 분리독법이 제기된다. 텍스트를 통해 심층 분석하는 쪽은 지해와의 차이에 주목한 연구들이다. 인용하는 지눌의 진술을 확인하면, 돈오(해오) 자체가 알음알이 혹은 주객분리의 대상적 인식이 아님은 명확하다. 지눌은 지해를 넘어 반조에 의한 돈오를 독려하고 있음을 거듭 확인할 수 있다. 원칙적으로 자성정혜를 강조하면서, 점수를 원점(圓漸)으로 이해하는 것을 보면 돈오 자체는 지해가 아니다. 이 글의 범주 내 인식 대부분은 성철이 제시한 ‘해오는 지해’라는 기준에 영향을 받고 있다. 지해와의 차이를 주장하는 쪽은 수사적 해명과 강조에 치중하는 경향을 보인다. 형식상 지해는 오(悟) 자체와 분화될 수 있다. 오 전후의 지해를 분리하면 오 자체를 확보할 수 있다. 초점을 체험 쪽에 둔다면, 혹은 오 자체에 둔다면 법(法)과 실존[人]을 고려하는 수증론으로서 돈오(-점수)의 특성이 살아날 수 있다고 본다. 초점 전환을 위해서는 선결 과제로서 지눌의 선교관과 그에 부합하는 회통방식이 규명되어야 한다. 지해와의 차이에 주목한 연구에선 믿음과 돈오의 연계적 즉일성을 확인하고 있다. 분리독법은 지눌의 본의 파악과 돈오점수의 이중성 문제를 안고 있다. 지눌의 언어를 정밀히 검토할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This article stems from the question of whether Sudden Enlightenment is experiential and the awareness of matters related to it. The basis and center of Jinul's practice system is viewed as Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Practice, and at the same time Jinul's Sudden Enlightenment itself is judged to be a holistic experience by reflection(見自本性) beyond the realm of knowledge. The controversy over being Sudden or Gradual brought about by the publication of Sunmunjeongro(禪門正路) produces various perceptions of Jinul's Sudden Enlightenment. It can be said that the main focus is the view to be confirmed as Enlightenment of Knowledge and the view to be different from it. The controversy focuses on defining the character of Enlightenment. Afterwards, a separate reading method is proposed to read the two dimensions of Sudden Enlightenment separately. The in-depth analysis through texts are studies that focus on the difference from Enlightenment of Knowledge. If we check Jinul's quoted statement, it is clear that (Sudden) Enlightenment itself is not Knowledge though the separation of subject and object. It can be confirmed again and again that Jinul is encouraging Sudden Enlightenment by Reflection beyond Enlightenment of Knowledge. In principle, while emphasizing Inherent Concentration and Wisdom(自性定慧) and understanding Gradual Enlightenment as Originally Gradual(圓漸), Sudden Enlightenment itself is not Enlightenment of Knowledge. Most of the perceptions within the category of this article are influenced by the criterion of “Enlightenment being Enlightenment of Knowledge” suggested by Seong-cheol. Those who claim the difference from Enlightenment of Knowledge tend to limit themselves to rhetorical explanations and emphasis. In a formal sense, Enlightenment of Knowledge can be differentiated from Enlightenment itself. By separating Enlightenment of Knowledge before and after Enlightenment, Enlightenment itself can be secured. If the focus is on Experience, or on Enlightenment itself, I think that the characteristic of Sudden Enlightenment (and Gradual Practice) can be revived as the Theory of Practice and Realization(修證論) that considers Dharma(法) and Existence(人). In order to change the focus, as a prerequisite, Jinul's View of Practice and Teaching(禪敎觀) and the harmonizing method corresponding to it must be identified. Research focusing on the difference from Enlightenment of Knowledge confirms the link between Faith and Sudden Enlightenment. The separate reading method has the problem of understanding Jinul's true intentions and the duality of Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Practice. It is necessary to carefully examine Jinul's language.
