중국 밀교승 일행(一行)의 실담장 고찰

국문 초록

일행은 선무외와 금강지로부터 금태양부의 부법을 전수받은 최초의 중국인 밀교 상승자이다. 그리고 그가 쓴 것으로 전해지는 범자 실담장이 ｢일행선사자모표｣이다. 이 실담장은 지광의 『실담자기』보다도 무려 백 년 이상 앞서 써진 것이다. 범자 음운과 관련되는 기초 교본인 실담장은 범자의 음소와 운소 등의 결합법칙을 통하여 범자 음운론을 완성시켜주는 성취장[실담장]이다. ｢일행선사자모표｣에는 지광의 『실담자기』와는 달리 범자 음운 각각에 불교적 상징을 적용하여 초장부터 제18장까지의 전체 실담장을 설명하고 있다. 당시의 일반적인 실담장 구성을 취하고 있는 ｢일행선사자모표｣를 지광의 『실담자기』는 그대로 받아들여 일본으로 전승하게 된 것으로 보인다. ｢일행선사자모표｣는 총 7언 114구와 5언 8구의 게송으로 구성되어 있다. 즉 a不生, ā寂靜, i根, ī災禍, u譬喩, ū損減, ŗ通, ṝ類例, ḷ染, ḹ塵沒, e求及, ai自在, o執暴流, au化, aṃ邊, aḥ遠離의 16마다와 34자의 체문인 ka作業, kha等空, ga行, gha合, ṅa支와 ca遷變, cha影像, ja生, jha戰, ña智와 ṭa慢, ṭha長, ḍa怨對, ḍha執持, ṇa諍와 ta如如, tha自(住), da施, dha法界, na名과 pa第一, pha不堅, ba縛, bha有, ma我와 ya垂(乘), ra離塵染, la相, va言斷(說), śa本性寂, ṣa鈍, sa諦, ha因, kṣa盡 등의 총 50자문이 서로 결합하는 법칙을 나타내고 있다. 비록 일행의 행적이나 저작 등에서는 자신의 자모표에 대한 직ㆍ간접적인 언급은 보이지 않으나, 실담학을 개창한 일본 밀교에서는 지광의 『실담자기』와 더불어 ｢일행선사자모표｣를 동아시아 실담장의 근본으로 여기고 있다. 그러한 내용이 『대정장』 실담부 권84 『실담륜약도초』(TD 2709)에서는 ｢일행선사자모표｣ 전문을 실고 있고, 『대일경소연오초』(TD 2216) 등에서는 자모표의 내용을 인용하고 있다. ｢일행선사자모표｣는 동아시아 실담장의 가장 이른 시기의 양상을 보여주는 자료라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Yixing(一行, 683-727), a Chinese monk of Esoteric Buddhism, was the first man of transmission of the teaching from master to disciple for both the vajra and garbha maṇḍalas from Subhakarasimha(善無畏, 637-735) and Vajrabodhi(金剛智, 671- 741). ｢Yixing’s Siddhaṃ Alphabet Chart｣ is said to have been written by Yixing, and is a Chinese Indic writing of Siddhavastu, which is more than a hundred years ahead of Zhiguang's Xitan ziji. Siddhavastu, a basic textbook related to Indic writing phonology, is an achievement sentence(Siddhavastu) that completes Indic writing phonology to achieve Indic writing's law of combination of phonemes and prosodemes. Unlike Zhiguang's Xitan ziji, ｢Yixing’s Siddhaṃ Alphabet Chart｣ explains the entire chapter from chapter 18 by applying Buddhist symbols to each Indic writing phoneme. In addition, ｢Yixing’s Siddhaṃ Alphabet Chart｣, consisting of 18 chapters, was a general composition of the Siddhavastu at the time, and the composition was accepted as it was in Zhiguang's Xitan ziji and passed on to Japan. ｢Yixing’s Siddhaṃ Alphabet Chart｣ consists of a total of seven words, 114 phrases, and five words and eight phrases. That is to say, Yixing’s Siddhavastu consist of 16 vowels, a(unproduced)ㆍā(quiescence)ㆍi(faculties)ㆍī(misfortune)ㆍu(simile)ㆍū(loss)ㆍŗ(to pass)ㆍṝ(example of species)ㆍḷ(defiled)ㆍḹ(burying)ㆍe(to seek and reach)ㆍai(sovereignty)ㆍo(grasped the turbulent flow of a stream or river)ㆍau(reformation)ㆍaṃ(border)ㆍaḥ(detached) and 34 consonants, ka(activity)ㆍkha(equal to space)ㆍga(topractice)ㆍgha(tounite)ㆍṅa(branchoff), ca(movetochange)ㆍcha(projectionsofconsciousness)ㆍja(arising)ㆍjha(war)ㆍña(knowledge),ṭa(pride)ㆍṭha(long)ㆍḍa(enemy)ㆍḍha(to appropriate)ㆍṇa(quarrel), ta(thusness)ㆍtha(abode)ㆍda(charity)ㆍdha(experiential realm)ㆍna(names), pa(best)ㆍpha(insubstantia)ㆍba(binding)ㆍbha(existence)ㆍma(self), ya(vehicle)ㆍra(free from pollution and defilement)ㆍla(characteristic)ㆍva(verbal expression)ㆍśa(briginal nature is quiescence)ㆍṣa(dull)ㆍsa(truth)ㆍha(acause)ㆍkṣa(toexhaust), a total of 50 texts represent the law of combining with each other. Although there are no direct or indirect references to his chart in the deeds or writings of Yixing, the Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, which opened the Siddhaṃ studies, considers him as the basis of the East Asian Siddhavastu along with Zhiguang's Xitan ziji. In the last analysis, ｢Yixing’s Siddhaṃ Alphabet Chart｣ can be said to be a data showing the earliest aspects of the East Asian Siddhavastu.
