영문 초록

Korea implemented the legal timber trade promotion system in October 2019 to promote the trade of legal timber and prevent deforestation. Since the policy regulates the trade of wood and wood products procured through illegal logging, it is expected to decrease timber imports and have effect on domestic timber industry. This study analyzes the effect of the policy on domestic timber industry and timber imports by country group. As a result, the import quantity from China and Vietnam compared to other countries for solid wood and categories of plywood according to the thickness decreased significantly after the implementation of the policy. Meanwhile, in the case of other items such as lumber and pellets, it was analyzed that imports from China and Vietnam were unaffected. The results suggest that the overall import trend increased after the implementation of the policy and all of the previous decreases in imports were recovered as shown in the trend graph which implies that the impact on the timber industry was negligible.
