In this paper, using the six registers of “The Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ)”, the characteristics of honorific expressions of modern Japanese were clarified through the analysis of the actual usage of honorific expressions in suru-verbs. In addition, based on the results of the analysis, we proposed an effective educational method for learning honorific expressions of suru-verbs from the viewpoint of Japanese language education. The main results of this study are as follows. First, in “books” and “magazines”, “Nasaru-group” accounts for about 60% of the honorifics for suru-verbs. However, the lighter and more casual “Sareru group” is often used rather than the highly respected “Nasaru group”, not only in the “Chiebukuro” and “Blog” where private thoughts and opinions are expressed casually, but also in the “Minutes of the Diet” and “Public Relations Paper” which are sent to the general public in a public place. Secondly, the honorific expressions with “O(Go)” to express high respect does not exceed 10% in both “Nasaru-group” and “Sareru- group”, which is considerably low. Thirdly, “-(を)+Nasaru” is used more frequently in the “Nasaru-group” with higher respect, and “Noun+Sareru” is used more frequently in the “Sareru-group” with less respect. Fourth, based on our analysis, the following three points were proposed from the perspective of Japanese language education. (1) Do not use honorific expressions with “O(Go)”. (2) Use “-(を)+ Nasaru” as a highly honorific expression. (3) Use “Noun+Sareru” as a honorific expression with a low degree of respect.
