제이슨 워커(Jason Walker) 작품의 특징과 창의적 표현연구

국문 초록

1950년대 이후 도자는 전통적인 가치관에서 벗어나 점차 표현의 매체로 인식하게 되면서 개인의 생각을 개념화할 수 있는 다양한 기법과 적극적인 방식이 사용되었다. 도자예술은 장식미술의 보편적 상징이 아닌 주체적인 표현의 다양성을 수용할 수 있게 되었다. 현대 도예가들은 관심의 범위가 확대되면서 자신만의 개성적인 어휘를 구사하여 작가 고유의 조형성을 찾게 되었다. 새로운 것을 창작하기 위해 예술가들은‘무엇’보다는‘어떻게’ 생각하는지가 중요해졌다. 특히 제이슨 워커(Jason Walker, 1973년~ )는 주제에 대해 접근하기 위해 독특한 방법을 구사하여 창의적인 작풍을 확립해 가고 있다. 제이슨 워커는 자연에 대한 인식을 재고해야 한다고 피력한다. 기술적인 진보는 인간을 중심으로 성장을 이루었으나 그 과정에서 자연은 새로운 환경에 적응하기 위해 변화하였다. 그래서 그는 이러한 환경에서 생존하는 자연과 이에 대한 자신의 관념을 구체화하는 방법으로 체험을 통한 관찰, 이질적인 대상들을 결합한 형태, 현실을 재현한 일러스트레이션, 공간을 확대한 설치를 통해 개념적인 틀을 완성하였다. 이러한 그의 창의적인 표현방법은 본래의 자연과 변화된 환경에서 인간과 공존하는 자연 사이에서 고뇌하는 작가의 의식을 명확히 전달하고 있다. 제이슨 워커의 작품에 내재된 의미를 통합하면‘자연이란 무엇인가’라는 근원적인 물음이라 할 수 있다. 특히 도예의 전통적인 일련의 과정을 고수하며 작가의 의식을 자유롭게 독자적인 형식으로 표현한다는 것은 인간과 삶 그리고 예술에 대한 깊은 성찰이 있어야 가능한 것이다. 그래서 그의 표현방법은 창의성이 발현되는 도자예술의 다양성을 확보할 수 있도록 한다. 예술작품은 존재하는 이유가 있다. 이 시대의 우리가 알아야 하는 것을 알도록 하고 말해야 하는 것에 대하여 말할 수 있어야 한다. 그리고 어떤 사실에 대해 그것이 진실이 아닐 수도 있음을 예술을 통해 말할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 그러한 의미에서 제이슨 워커의 작품은 자연에 대한 작가의 의식을 통합적인 통찰로 나타낸다. 또한, 현실에 당면한 문제를 다시 생각할 수 있도록 인식하고 선택·결합하는 과정을 거쳐 창의적인 결과물로 완성한다. 이것은 도예뿐만 아니라 예술에서 새로운 조형으로서의 가능성을 위한 모범사례라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Since the 1950s, ceramic objects have been actively grown out of the traditional world view and ceramists have perceived them as a medium and applied various techniques and expressions. Ceramic art became no longer a universal symbol of decorative art but accommodating the diversity of subjective expressions. As the scope of their interest expands, modern ceramists use their own unique vocabulary to find the artist’s unique formativeness. In order to create something new, it has become more important for artists to think ‘how’ rather than ‘what’. In particular, Jason Walker (1973 -) is establishing a creative style by using a unique method to approach the theme. Jason Walker claims we should reconsider our perception of nature. Technological progress has grown in an anthropocentric way, but in the process, nature has changed to break down the existing order or adapt to the new environment. In this environment, therefore, he completed a conceptual framework by undertaking observations through experience that is a way to embody his ideas about surviving nature, combining heterogeneous objects, creating illustrations that reproduce reality, and installing expanded spaces. These creative expression methods clearly convey the artist’s consciousness of agonizing between nature coexisting in an environment transformed into technology and original nature. If we understand all his works in a holistic way, the fundamental question can be ‘what is nature?’ In particular, he adheres to the traditional series of processes of ceramics and freely expresses the artist’s consciousness in his own form, which is possible only with deep reflection on humans, life, and art. Thus, his expression method allows him to secure the diversity of ceramic art in which creativity is expressed. A work of art has its own reason why it exists. We should be able to know what we need to know and talk about what we need to say in this era. We should be also able to say that it may not be true about a fact through art. In this sense, Jason Walker’s work expresses the artist’s consciousness of nature with an integrated insight. In addition, this is completed as a creative result through the process of recognizing, selecting, and combining problems facing reality so that we can reconsider them. This can be said to be an exemplary example not only for ceramics but also for the possibility as a new form in art.
