팬데믹 시대의 죽음

국문 초록

이 글은 코로나19 동안 여러 지역에서 나타난 죽음의 모습을 출발점으로 삼아 역사에서 팬데믹 시대의 죽음이 수습되고 처리된 과정을 살펴본다. 여기서는 과거의 팬데믹 중 하나인 1918년 인플루엔자 시기 미국에 초점을 맞춘다. 1918년 가을 인플루엔자 사망자가 급증하자 미국의 지역사회는 시신 수습에 어려움을 겪었다. 관이 부족한데다 무덤을 팔 노동력도 충분치 않아 몇날 며칠 시신을 집안에 두어야 하는 경우도 있었고, 감염을 우려하여 장례를 서두르는 바람에 공동묘지에 한꺼번에 매장하고 나중에 이장하는 상황도 벌어졌다. 팬데믹 시대의 장례에는 비용의 문제와 방식의 차이도 극명하게 드러났는데, 당시 죽음을 수습하는 과정에서는 무엇보다 장의사의 역할이 중요했다. 특히 미국에서는 매장을 선호한데다 장례의식의 일부가 된 방부처리의 전통이 감염병의 예방과 연계되면서 방부처리를 해야만 안전하게 죽음을 처리할 수 있다는 생각이 굳어졌다. 팬데믹이 많은 이들을 단기간에 사망으로 이끌었기 때문에 같은 시기 특정 집단에 대한 차별이나 비난은 적었으나, 인플루엔자 사망자의 시신이 내포한 공포와 죽음의 충격은 쉽게 사라지지 않았다. 1918년 인플루엔자 당시 죽음의 모습은 오늘날을 살아가는 우리에게도 많은 시사점을 제시한다. 애도의 부재, 강요된 장례 방식 등으로 인해 팬데믹으로 야기된 죽음과 거리를 두게 되었지만, 과거를 돌아보는 데서 현재를 이해할 방법을 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Beginning with the images of deaths during the early days of the Covid-19 outbreak, this study examines the ways in which death was discussed and managed in the time of pandemic. Here, I focus on the 1918 Influenza pandemic in the United States. As the number of influenza deaths increased in the fall of 1918, American communities found themselves unable to cope with dead bodies. Coffins and caskets ran out, gravediggers were in great shortage. Many Americans had to spend several days with their dead relatives, unable to bury them; in some places, the dead were picked up en masse and sent to potter’s fields so that they would not contaminate the living. Funerals also cost money, and families were faced with limited choices about how to bury and honor their dead. Americans preferred burial to cremation and eagerly embraced embalming as a means to curb contagion. Through the pandemic, undertakers, who now called themselves funeral directors, solidified their position as professionals. With so many people dying in such a short period, there was not enough time to blame specific groups of people for spreading the disease; nevertheless, the fear of the unnamed dead, both foreign and contagious, lingered. The images of deaths during the 1918 Influenza pandemic offer insights for those of us who have been living through yet another pandemic. We have tended to take distance from pandemic-induced deaths, afraid of the new, unexpected circumstances, but understanding various forms of death from the past may teach us how to cope with our present maladies.
