언캐니 개념의 변화에 관한 연구

국문 초록

IT 산업의 발달로 현대인들은 디지털 세상과 긴밀하게 상호작용하고 있는데 그러한 현상은 팬데믹 이후 더욱 심화되고 있다. 이러한 사회현상 속에서 버추얼 인플루언서 ‘로지’의 인간과 매우 유사한 모습에서 오는 이질감은 현대인들에게 낯설고 익숙한 감정을 느끼게 한다. 본 연구는 과거 초현실주의 자들이 추구했던 언캐니와 21세기 디지털시대의 언캐니의 차이에 주목하였다. 20세기 언캐니는 산업화 에 따른 인간신체의 기계화로 인한 불쾌 및 두려움과 같은 외상적인 것이었다면, 21세기는 하나의 미 적 취향으로 사회에 받아들여지고 있다. 이러한 현상을 3명의 현대도예작가의 작품을 통해 동일한 미 학이 시대에 따라 어떻게 반영되고 있는지를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 세르게이는 에로틱한 그림과 무관한 형태를 대비시켜 억압받고 있는 인간의 본성에 대한 탐구를, 존 슨 창은 사실적인 인체 묘사에서 오는 기묘함과 유희성을, 셰리 보일은 상반되는 개념의 경계를 허물 어 낯설고 기괴한 존재 속에 작가의 욕망을 투영시킨다. 연구는 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 첫째, 동일한 미학적 개념이라도 시대변화에 따라 다른 성 격으로 나타나고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 디지털 시대의 언캐니는 과거와 비교하였을 때 유 희성이라는 두드러진 특징을 보여주고 있으며 사회에서 하나의 취향으로 작용하고 있다는 사실도 밝힐 수 있었다. 마지막으로 현대도예를 분석하는 틀이 부정성의 미학에만 치우쳤다면 본 연구는 시대적 특 징을 비교하여 기존의 미학적 특성과 표현영역에 대한 분석틀의 확장을 꾀할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

With the development of the IT industry, modern people are closely interacting with the digital world, and such a phenomenon is getting worse after the pandemic. In such a social phenomenon, the sense of heterogeneity that comes from the human-like appearance of the virtual influencer ‘ROZY’ makes them feel unfamiliar and familiar to modern people. This study focused on the difference between the uncanny pursued by the surrealists in the past and the uncanny in the digital age of the 21st century. While uncanny in the 20th century was traumatic such as discomfort and fear caused by the mechanization of the human body following industrialization, the 21st century is being accepted by society as an aesthetic taste. The purpose of this phenomenon is to reveal how the same aesthetics are being reflected according to the times through the works of three contemporary ceramic artists. Sergei explores the oppressed nature of human nature by contrasting forms unrelated to erotic paintings, Johnson Tsang presents the strangeness and playfulness that comes from realistic depictions of the human body, and Shary Boyle breaks down the boundaries of opposing concepts and projects the artist s desires into an unfamiliar and bizarre existence. The study drew the following conclusions. First, it can be seen that even the same aesthetic concept appears with different characteristics according to the change of time. Second, it was possible to reveal the fact that uncanny in the digital age shows a distinctive feature of playfulness compared to the past and acts as a taste in society. Lastly, if the framework for analyzing modern ceramics was focused only on the aesthetics of negativity, this study could expand the analysis framework for the existing aesthetic characteristics and expression domain by comparing the characteristics of the times.
