버나드 리치(Bernard Leach)의 만년기 도예활동과 작품의 특성 - 1950~1979

국문 초록

20세기의 대표적 도예가라 할 수 있는 영국인 버나드 리치(Bernard Leach)는 일본에서 도예를 시작하여 영국의 세인트 아이브스를 중심으로 도예가와 공예저술가, 그리고 강연자로서 국제적인 활동을 했다. 그에게 도예활동은 동양의 고전적 도자기에 내재한 문화적 가치와 서양의 합리적 과학이 융합하는 모델로서 의미가 있으며, 그의 저술 및 강연활동도 동서양의 문화적 결합이라는 사상적 기반에서 이해될 수 있다. 이러한 배경에서, 본 고는 리치가 가장 활발하고 국제적인 활동을 한 1950년에서 그가 사망하는 1979년까지를 시간적 범위로 하여 그의 도예관련 활동의 족적을 살피고 그의 작품의 조형적 특성과 주요 제작기법을 고찰하였다. 리치는 지적으로 각성된 개인도예가 혹은 미술가적 공예가로서의 입장을 견지했고 그러한 활동은 현대도예에‘studio pottery’의 개념을 낳게 되었다. 또한 그는 자신의 공방인 리치포테리(Leach Pottery)를 통해 수많은 제자들을 양성하였고, 그들의 활동은 특히 서구 현대도예계의 확장에 이어졌다. 또한 수공에 의한 염가의 일용식기인 스탠다드웨어(standard-ware)를 생산해 민예운동을 실천하기도 했다. 특히 1950~60년대에 리치는 국제적인 도예활동과 저술 및 강연을 열정적으로 펼쳤다. 그로인해 산업시대에 있어서의 수공예의 현대적 가치를 역설하였고 공예가의 활동에 영감과 미적 기준을 제시함으로써 예술가적 인식 혹은 개인의식에 바탕한 공방도예가(studio potter)의 파급에 큰 역할을 하였다. 리치의 만년기 작품이 지닌 조형적 특성은 크게 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 일본과 한국 및 중국의 고전적 도자기의 형태와 제작술에 영향 받은 점이다. 둘째, 야나기 무네요시를 비롯한 일본의 민예운동가들과의 교류를 통해 수용된 민예적 양식이다. 셋째, 제작과정에서의 유기적 조형의 추구이다. 또한 리치 작품의 주요 제작기법으로는 물레성형에 기초하면서 무문형, 면치기, 골파기, 스크라피토(sgraffito), 발수제 기법, 붓에 의한 시문 등으로 요약될 수 있다.

영문 초록

Bernard Leach, one of the most regarded British potter in 20th century period of modern pottery, started his career in Japan. Starting from St. Ives in England, he went international as a potter, a crafts author and a speaker. His career in pottery models fusion work of the cultural essence of Eastern pottery and the science of the West and his writings and lectures find their philosophical basis on the combination of Eastern and Western culture. With the background, this document looks at Leach’s works and activities between 1950 and 1979, which are the years Leach was the busiest and active internationally until he breathed his last. It will also provide the study of the design characteristics and important production techniques of his works. As a potter, Leach was a bright intellect as an artist-potter or artist-craftsman and his works bore the idea of ‘studio pottery’ in modern ceramics. Moreover, many were apprenticed in his studio, Leach Pottery, and his students contributed greatly in the expansion of the modern western pottery. He also produced ‘standard-ware’ handmade pottery for the general public, which eventually lead to folk art movement. During 1950s and 1960s, with passion, Leach went international with his pottery, writings and lectures. Playing a crucial role in spreading the idea of studio potter, Leach emphasized the value of handicraft in the industrial-age and provided inspiration and aesthetic standards of potters. The design characteristic of Leach’s work in his later years can be summarized into three parts. First, it is influenced by forms and production techniques of traditional Japanese, Korea and Chinese pottery. Second, it is in the folk art style that was the fruit of Leach’s exchange with many Japanese folk artists, such as Soets Yanagi. Third, it pursues the holistic design in production process that encompass philosophy, design and craft. Leach’s main production methods are wheel-throwing based, pattern less, faceting, fluting, graffito, water-repellent technique, brushing, and etc.
