국문 초록

이 연구에서 나는 성소수자인 자녀로부터 커밍아웃을 받은 후 반강제적으로 성소수자 부모라는 위치에 처해져 있던 부모들이 성소수자 부모라는 위치를 자임하며 새로운 행위성을갖게 되는 과정을 ‘성소수자 부모-되기’로 보고 그것의 교육적 의미를 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 성소수자 부모임을 밝힌 부모들이 활발하게 활동 중인 성소수자부모모임에서 3년 동안 참여관찰을 진행하였다. 부모들은 가족 및 세계와 이전과는 다르게 관계를 맺게 되었으며, 가족은 연령차별주의나 성차별주의를 학습하는 사회화의 단위가 아닌 소수성에 친화적인 문화를 생성하는 교육적 단위가 되고 있었다. 성소수자 부모-되기는 본분에 충실하고, 의무를 다하는 것을 부모됨이라고 보던 것에서 성소수자 부모라는 자아를 공적인 자리에서 인정받는 체험, 이질적인 타인과 소통하는 체험을통해 성소수자 부모가 된다는 것의 의미를 구성하는 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 이 과정에서 이루어지는 학습을 살펴보면, 자녀의 성적 지향 및 성별 정체성에 관한 학습, 특이성을 억압하는 대상황적 맥락과 소수자가 고통받는 소상황을 연결하게 되는 매개상황에서의 학습, 소수자의 얼굴 그 자체와 만나고 그에 대한 책임 의식을 느끼는 존재를 향한 학습이 있다. 성소수자 부모-되기는 자신이 학습한 바를 타인에게 알리는 교육의 역할을 부여하고, 과거의 사건과의 연장선상에서 새로운 선택을 하는 존재로 자신의 내러티브를 구성하게 하며, 소수자에게정의롭지 못한 방식으로 사회화되었던 세계를 변화시키고자 하는 시도로 이어진다는 점에서교육적 의미가 있었다. 이는 기존의 부모 됨에 대한 반성을 통해 더 나은 부모-되기로 나아가는 것이자, 가족에 한정된 테두리를 넘어 세계와 관계 맺는 존재로 자신을 새롭게 위치짓는일이다.

영문 초록

This study describes the process by which parents, who were semi-forcibly placed in the position of being parents of sexual minorities after their children “came out,” regard themselves as such parents, and exhibit new behavior patterns, and attempts to clarify its educational meaning. Participatory observation was conducted with a group of parents of LGBTQ children over a period of three years. These parents identified themselves as parents of sexual minorities and actively engaged in society. Parents had formed a different type of relationship with the family and the world than the previous generation, and the family was becoming an educational unit that creates a minority-friendly culture, not a unit of socialization learning ageism or sexism. Becoming-parents of sexual minorities is a process of building the meaning of becoming such parents through the experience of being recognized as such in public places and communicating with others away from the conventional view that being faithful to and fulfilling one’s duties were all that mattered for model parenthood. Among the types of learning that take place in this process are learning about the child’s sexual orientation and gender identity, learning from a mediating situation that connects the smaller situation which makes the minority suffer within the larger context that suppresses the minority, and learning toward beings who encounter minorities themselves and feel a sense of responsibility for them. Becoming-parents of an LGBTQ child has educational meaning in that it allows the parents to educate others on what they have learned, allows them to construct their own narratives as beings who make new choices in line with past events, and leads them to attempt to change the world, which has been conditioned in an unjust way for minorities. Thus, individuals become better parents by reflecting on existing parenthood and by repositioning oneself as a being in relation to the world beyond the limits of the family.
